A question about : Advice on debt

Please could you advise on how I stand in regards to a demand for payment. I have had storage for many years and paid religiously every month never having any correspondence from the company in respect of increase in fees.
Today I received a final demand from a debt recovery for over Ј1,400. I contacted both the owner asking why he had never contacted me by mail. His argument was he had tried by phone? and email and couldn't find me and then quoted my address.
To be fair debt recovery were helpful and have spoken with the owner who unfortunately still has my property.
I'm not in a position at the moment to be able to move the property and find myself unsure what to do.
Any advice would be helpful please

Best answers:

  • How has the debt arisen?
It is all solely in relation to increases to the original fee rates?
Have they sent you a detailed breakdown showing the charges for each month?
Do you have a copy of your original contract with the storage company? what does that say in relation to increases in the rates? does it say how you will be notified?
Had you provided the storage company with an email address? and since finding out about the debt have you checked to see if any emails had been sent?
  • Hi the email address is no longer valid and I admit the oversight of not updating the business but he had my home address. When I spoke to him this afternoon he was quite condescending saying he had no way of contacting me as my phone number had changed yet he quoted my home address. The sum owing is due to annual increases accrued over the past 4 years - so why has he waited this long?
The debt recovery were helpful but he is wanting a large amount every month and an immediate increase in fees but his account has now changed and he hasn't given new details out.
I've tried to ring CAB but unsuccessfully and I'm so upset I don't think I could talk anyway.
The recovery will set up payment and the guy has said I can remove my property but I'm still confused as to the legalities of it all.
