  • Hiya i guess it depends on what type it is, my mum has rhumatoid arthritis, but my nan suffered with osteo arthritis (sp? sorry)
they've both used conventional treatments, prescribed medicines etc and arnica, i've found a couple of sites for ya to look at as i dont want to give ya any incorrect advice etc, but there are members who suffer from this so im sure they will be able to give ya more personal info on there condition/treatments etc

  • Assuming you've seen a doctor and have a dianosis? (arthritis and rheumantism are different).
Take Glucosamine everyday and also try L-Glutamine as it may help with general aches and pains. I've tried other supplements but found most of them to be a waste of money.

  • Thanks peeps!
  • Omega-3 fatty acids.
Note the dose of EPA recommended for rheumatiod arthritis If your taking that amount you will need a cheap source try ZIPVIT Omega Juice
Rheumatology and musculoskeletal medicine. is happy to concede Glucosamine and Chronditin may be worthwhile. again Zipvit will probably be cheapest. I have read elsewhere research confirming Zipvit claims that the liquid form is more effective that the tablets but it does look more expensive so you'll have to get out a calculator and see how it works out on a daily dose basis.
Selected complementary and alternative medicine therapies for arthritis-related pain: the evidence from systematic reviews
this one also suggests GLA gamma linolenic acid for pain of rheumatoid arthritis. You'll find GLA in Evening Primrose Oil Starflower Oil Borage seed oil but as you need 2g a day of GLA you will have to get out the calculator again to work out which works out to be the most cost effective. Post back if can find anyone to beat Zipvit's prices.
  • I was reading a thread just this morning about how vinegar helps! (Unsuprisingly it was on the Thrift board.. ;D)
I can't find the link to that specific post, but if you do a general internet search it brings up lots and lots - it's apple cider vinegar you want to look for. I think, you mix a teaspoon with a teaspoon of honey in a wineglassful of hot water and drink and it helps relieve the pain
  • I have rheumatoid arthritis and have never heard myself of the cider vinegar & honey helping this, otherwise I would be the first one on it. My Mum is a firm believer in cider vinegar and has used it for years, It is very good for chesty coughs and I believe if taken in a little hot water with the spoonful of honey it can be quite effective.
My Mum has a vinegar book that she got from somewhere and it has loads of stuff in there, so I will try to find out.
But I do think if there was any relief that the cider vinegar could give for the arthritis my Mum would have told me by now, as she knows how bad my rheumatoid arthritis is and she suffers herself from Osteoarthritis. :-/
My Mum is 74 and has always been into herbs and things like that and I'm sure if there was anything to help either of us she would have said.
I did try some of the things Ted mentioned but they didn't agree with me unfortunately, only that the cod liver oil and the anti-oxidants that I take don't do any harm but do give you nice skin.
I am under a consultant at the hospital and take the medication and the rest that they perscribe, plus now on steroids too plus the injections
I will try to find out about the vinegar for you just incase.
  • You might want to check out this link for more info re vinegar

  • [glow=red,2,300]Aromatherapy[/glow]
    Geranium oil is anti-inflammatory.
Lavender may also help as it is a relaxant.
I have had something called 'emu oil' for a dodgy knee and it seems to work. I don't know if it is the oil of real emus!!!???
Interested by this thread as I have lovely elderly neighbours who are suffering quite a bit from arthritis. I hope I can help them from the advice given here so far.
  • A colleague of mine was unable to work because of osteoarthritis and has had great results with a product that uses magnets. The particular one he uses has been clinically trialled in Devon (funded by The Arthritis Research campaign) and the doctor who led the trial found that patients did benefit from the product. The research showed that weak magnets were no more effective that the dummy. If you want to know more send me a pm
  • has anyone had any luck with milk ? since i have been diagnosed not fully but something to due with rhuematoid factor i have been on about 4 - 5 pints a day and it has helped a lot BUT if i dont have that much milk then my joints start to hurt i feel tired etc.
  • I have rheumatoid arthritis and not heard of this, but I love milk and would certainly give it ago. Does it not affect your weight or cholesterol??, just a thought as its a dairy product, but very good on the calcium factor.
I will ask my consultant in April when I see him, what he thinks, I will let you know and post what he says when I have been.
I know this doesn't help now as its only February, unless anyone else finds out, it may depend on the individual also how it affects them.
  • I have osteo-arthritis in my right knee & inner thigh. I have been on Celecoxib (Celebrex) for the past 2 years. Never had any pain since, nor gastro-intestinal problems which ordinary NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories) can give you. However, 2 medical tests have revealed that Celecoxib may give you heart problems, but 2 other trials revealed no problems. Although the BMA has advised GPs to stop prescibing them I will continue taking them for as long as I am allowed to. I would rather take them than have the pain back again. The only alternative would be an ordinary NSAID along with an anti-gastrointestinal capsule like Omeprazole.
  • hello everyone
my mum suffers from arthrosis, a form of arthritis. She has lost weight, takes glucosamine, omega 3 oils and Devils Claw but finds her swimming sessions unbeatable at keeping her feeling mobile and pain-free. Three times a week for an hour each time. Best of luck
  • I teach aquafit (water exercise) classes and people have reported big benefits from water exercise and swimming.
