My family will be moving from Orkney to Fife in March/April 2015. We want to provide more opportunities for our children and be closer to family who live in Fife & Edinburgh. Can you give me any advice on the best places to stay for families (kids are 14 &10 years old). We have relatives in Dunfermline and Lochgelly. We did look at Edinburgh but housing is too expensive. We will be renting and looking for a 3 bedroom place, preferably with a garage. Not sure if we would get on the housing list for a council house or what the process would be for that.
Any advice on areas, housing, schools, facilities for kids/families would be greatly appreciated.

• Orkney is such a beautiful place , I'm thinking Dalgety Bay on the Fife coastal path may appeal. Desirable in demand area , 2 good primary schools , 2 miles to High School in Inverkeithing. Good bus service to Edinburgh/Dunfermline and small train station with halfhourly service to capital. Better transport links from Inverkeithing , more affordable housing , not as desirable. Dunfermline is a lovely town , there is a 3bed new unfurnished house for rent in town centre on s1homes for Ј650pm. Outskirts of Dunfermline offer lots of new housing on the eastern expansion of Duloch , schools , retail park etc. Wishing you happiness in your move, I moved to Fife 26 years ago from Edinburgh , I must like it as I'm still here.
• Dunfermline is nicer than Lochgelly.
  I would contact a local EA for available properties to rent then check out the schools nearby.

• Lots of new housing in the Duloch Park area of Dunfermline of various sizes from flats to 5 bedroomed.
  Just off the A90 so quick access to north and south as well as A92 to Kirkcaldy / Glenrothes / St Andrews.
  several large supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Aldi etc), 3 newish primary schools (Masterton, Duloch and Carnegie). Small shopping area - Barrhead travel, betfred, hairdresser, chip shop, pizza takeaway. Nearby is a large Dobbies, Odeon cinema, bowling complex, several restaurants and a mini golf place so a few things for the kids to do.
  Park and ride to Edinburgh close by (though do need a car to get there!) another one at Inerkeithing along with the train station with services to Edinburgh and beyond and north to Inverness / Aberdeen (though you do need to change stations at Kirkcaldy or Dundee normally).
  Can get bus into Dunfermline from the Tesco or down to Inverkeithing train station if no car but better having one.
  Large park and wooded area great for walks.
  Amazon plant close by so get orders pretty quickly lol!!
  Dalgety Bay another nice town - has a large Asda, small Tesco plus a few other shops. Buses and train station so can get to Edinburgh fine. Doesn't get the snow in the winter as badly as Duloch area which is further inshore (good or bad depending on point of view lol). Radioactive beach (one of them anyway - dont let your dog or kid play for too long!).
  Not so sure on Rosyth but there are new flats going up on the outskirts. Inverkeithing closer to the bridge - older properties / flats / council properties.
  Further along - Aberdour. More expensive as retirement community but does have train station.
