A question about : adding an extra person to a train booking

I think I know the answer but just in case....

I've booked tickets for myself and DS using our friends and family discount card. If OH decides he'd like to accompany us is there anyway he can be added?
Or will it be full price for him as he didn't book at the same time as us?

Best answers:

  • He can join you and buy a discounted ticket with the F&F Railcard.
The only issue is that I don't think any of the online ticket booking sites will sell a F&F Railcard discounted ticket for one adult, so you might well need to buy the ticket at a station or via a telesales line.
Are you travelling using Advance tickets (i.e. where you have to travel on specified trains)?
  • Yes we are travelling on specified trains.
Tbh OH probably won't come, I just wondered what if he wanted to. As like yourself I'd realised I couldn't buy just an adult ticket online at the discounted rate via friends and family card.
Would it be possible to buy one adult inputting a different card during the online process, but travel with the f and f card?
I mean all cards give same discount don't they?
Do the tickets actually state which discount card has been used? I can't recall, never checked previously.
  • I know he wouldn't necessarily get the same discount we have as he would be buying nearer the time.of departure. But buying a ticket prior to travel either with or without a discount card, is cheaper than purchasing on the day isn't it?
  • Some of the cards give similar discounts but have different restrictions. It does say on the ticket which card should accompany the discounted ticket. You should not try and purchase a ticket picking a different railcard to the one you hold.
  • Ok thanks guys that's handy to know. As I thought if not purchased with my son's and I, he had missed the boat. And that it would be a full price ticket he have to purchase.
Just checked and today's price for a single adult no discount on the same train is Ј21:50. I paid Ј14:10 for son and I. So even if the cheaper seats sell out buying a discounted ticket from the ticket office will be a saving.
    Thanks again every one
  • why not buy another adult and child ticket using the railcard if it's cheaper than the single adult fare?
  • Yes hxm that thought did cross my mind.
It's more curiosity thing as there is more chance of him not coming than coming. But as he was dithering I decided I couldn't wait to book as didn't want to miss the cheaper tickets, for my son and I who are definitely going.
