A question about : Absolutely Free Cavity Wall Insulation

Good evening everyone, we are with Age Concern Powergen electricity only (we have no gas!) and if you are over 60 you can have cavity wall insulation on your home for nothing. You do not have to be on pension credit or benefits. We also understand that Scotpower are doing something similar, hope this may help someone to save on their fuel bills, as we shall be doing soon!! Regards oap

Official note

Powergen is doing free cavity wall insulation for the overs 60s or people on means tested benefits, tax credit or pension credit (you have to be a homeowner).

Powergen reckons that cavity wall insulation can cut your energy bills by up to Ј160 (based on a three bedroom semi-detached house) so it's worth a shot.

You can also get free loft insulation if you're on means tested benefits, tax credit or pension credit. You have to be a homeowner with no insulation or have insulation less than 25mm thick.

Both these offers are nationwide and run til 31 October 2005. Call 0800 479 0162 for more details.

  • My mum has just joined powergen and got a leaflet through asking for Ј150 for cavity wall insulation!!!
  • Hi skywalker,Im with Powergen I am having my cavity walls done next week.I dont claim any benefits apart from the basic pension,
Tell mum to phone the number on the leaflet and tell them her age, thats what I did.she is entitled to this.
  • i am with powergen
this morning i had a home assessment and as my husband is over 60 we will receive FREE cavity wall insulation
    CALL 0800 479 0162
if you are over 60 to get FREE insulation
you just have to show proof of age when someone comes to make an assessment
you also arrange a password when you telephone ,so that you know assesser is genuine when he comes to your house
    hope this helps
  • It should be stressed that, although the only requirement is for the house owner to be 60 or over, he/she must be a Powergen customer.
  • As I already mentioned on another forum, Powergen presently have an offer where they will install cavity wall insulation any of their customers for Ј75. The same leaflet states that over 60s and those receiving a "qualifying benefit" can have it installed for free.
  • as a powergen customer i might be interested in having it done. can't find any details of the offer on there website? would it be Ј75 for a 3 bed semi?
  • If you go onto the website (www.powergen.co.uk) and click on Energy Efficiency at the top of the page and then click onto 'home insulation'.
Or you could ring the 'Powergen Energy Efficiency team' on 0500-201000 between 9am - 5pm Monday- Friday.
    Hope that helps
  • My Mum just had the Ј75 cavity wall offer from Powergen done yesterday, she lives in Lincoln. The men turned up at 8am and by all accounts did a very good job. She says it was well worth the Ј75 and they left her with a certificate guaranteeing it for 20 years.
  • I had our 3 bed end terrace insulated about 5 yrs agof or about 300 quid (that was 200 quid off by a grant) and it has been excellent! makes a real difference, house is much warmer in the winter, fuel bills have definetly fallen! go for it!
  • HI all, Thje Government are backing a scheme, called "Warm Front" which will provide up to Gas Central Heating to the over 60s up to a value of Ј2500, and includes free maintenance and Gas Saftey Checks for 2 years, for the under 60s on benefits there are othere energy saving offers up to Ј1500. Although Im under 60. I arranged for my 80 yr old uncle to have a full gas central heating system installed at a cost of ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING. try it nothing to lose
  • I got my cavity walls done today.
Two men arrived at 8am and were finished and away before 9.30.they have done a very neat job,and hosed away all the dust.
It was Dyson Insulations working for Powergen..Im very impressed.
  • If you are in a Council house the Council will do it for nothing, plus loft
    insulation.
  • The government is keen for homeowners to insulate their homes, but cavity walls were built as a barrier against penetrating dampness.
  • I am going top try following this through. I am not over 60, but am a powergen customer, single parent, home owner etc. My three bed semi is often still cold in deep winter despite putting in really good loft insulation and double galzing. I thnk its because I have a fairly old heating system and can't afford to replace it yet.
  • Hi there it is interesting to read that so many people are interested in cavity wall insulation. It is important to note (and I refer specifically to the person asking if cavity walls should be filled) that there are a great deal of grants that come directly from your local authority and any company worth their salt will issue their customers with an insurance backed guarantee which will last 25 years. It would be especially worth contacting your local authority if you claim;
    Pension credit,
working family tax credit (and your household income is less than 14600 p/a), child tax credit (and your household income is less than 14600 p/a),
    disability living allowance,
    attendance allowance,
    income based job seekers allowance,
council tax benefit (this is not the reduction you get if you live on your own), income support
    Housing benefit,
    Disabled person's tax credit,
War disablement pension (must also be in receipt of mobility supplement or constant attendance allowance)
Industrial injuries disablement benefit (must also be in receipt of constant attendance allowance)
It is worth remembering that the utility companies have been steadily putting their prices up and council tax goes up every year so you might as well get something for your money! Even if you are not on benefits give the council a ring and they can advise you - there are loads of grants available for all areas.
  • I had my cavity walls done a couple of years back for free and have just applied for a new combi boiler, both through Warm Zone. They are a Government grant scheme for cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and heating improvements in England (links to Scotland, Wales & N.I. equivalent on the site as well as other schemes). The list of where the 'Zones' are in England is at the top of the page.
The grant is available up to a maximum of Ј2,700 (or Ј4,00 where oil-fired central heating is concerned). When I asked if already getting a grant for having the cavity walls done would affect the size of grant I got for the boiler, I was told it wouldn't as it was a new claim in a new year . I'm not sure why it was mentioned that the grant is less for under 60's - I'm only 31 but have been given the Ј2,700 each time.
They based it on me getting Child Tax credit and Child benefit, and not the carers allowance my husband gets or the DLA my daughter gets which I found odd .
  • I agree it's worth it's weight in gold It really does keep the house warm and the heating bills down
