A question about : 3 night break in Sorrento

Hi there have finally booked for early May and can't wait after finding flights for under Ј100. Would like a hotel, b and b or apartment near the centre but with seaview if possible. Can anyone recommend anywhere from personal experience - up to about Ј100 per night for double.
Would appreciate any other moneysaving tips but also how to make the most of our limited time there. Thinking of catching bus on way there from Naples airport but taxi on way back as our flight is 12.20 lunchtime. Would love to catch a bus to see the Amalfi coastline - which of the towns would you choose if only one and is the boat trip to or from very sea-swelly as I'm not very good on those sort of trips.
Any restaurant recommendations would be much appreciated. thanks

  • If I had to choose one of the Amalfi towns it would probably be Amalfi or Positano. But you shouldn't miss Ravello - it's not on the coast itself, it's higher up.
Have a pizza in Naples! I had a great one here: https://www.frescotrattoria.it/ courtesy of Alfredo, their excellent pizza chef - but there are loads of places in Naples to get a nice pizza.
  • Sorrento, however beautiful it is, is overrated and over priced. Why not the Aeolian Islands? They are cheaper, quieter and stunning.
  • I've only got 3 nights!
  • We stayed in the Grand Hotel Royal which is lovely, but I'm sure blows the Ј100 budget!
The bus from the airport is dead easy, we got the hydrofoil / taxi back to Naples.
There's also an open top bus tour that runs from Sorrento around the coast with a short stop off. It's a nice way to see the area, although a bit touristy and you don't have the flexibility to explore.
  • I'm back off to Sorrento next week and have booked Sorrento Apartments for about Ј70 per night. My favourite hotel, Minerva (best views in town), isn't open til after Easter, so I whittled the options down to a choice between the Apartments and Tasso Suites. As you've only got 3 days, it's well worth staying on Via Capo or on the old town rather than over towards Sant Agnello.
We're having a few days in Rome before getting the train to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento for 3 Euros each. Il David ice cream parlour is just outside the train station, and probably the best one in town.
You should be able to catch the airport bus on the return also, and if there's just two of you, it'll be half the cost of a taxi.
As mentioned above, we'll be off to Amalfi on the local bus and straight up to Villa Cimbrone in Ravello.https://www.villacimbrone.com/en/entrance.php To me, it's one of the most beautiful places in the World. Amalfi and Positano are stunning too. With more time, a boat trip to Capri would be tempting, but I'd definitely chose the Amalfi Drive local bus first.
Dining in Sorrento can be expensive if you're not careful, but pizza at Fauno Bar on Piazza Tasso is worth it for the prime location and people watching. https://faunobar.it/en/index.php
I hope you have a fabulous time.
  • Minerva looks lovely but fully booked. Thinking of the Settimo Cielo which looks to be nearby. Is it near enough to the centre in terms of getting to bus and train stations for day trips eating etc. Does the same bus go to Positano and then on to Ravello or is it a different one?
  • There is a fabulous restaurant high up above Positano, in the village of Montepertuso called La Tagliata. You will not find anywhere better - good food, reasonable prices and a view to die for - check out www.latagliata.com
  • Avoid using taxis, they cost a small fortune, and I hope they have cleaned the place up a bit, Sorrento wasn't shabby chic it was more run down dump when I visited for a wedding.
  • second the comment about taxis!
its nice to go by water taxi to Sorrento from the port of Naples, you get a nice view on the way round.

  • thanks for all your continuing tips and suggestions - they are much appreciated. I have now booked the Settimo Cielo which is near the Bristol hotel on Via Capo and am pleased with my choice.
I was wondering if anyone know if there were any restaurants nearby - we will be arriving Friday lunchtime tired after an early flight and hungry and don't want to do our usual trailing round to find somewhere to eat.
Also any general restaurant recommendations would be appreciated - more rustic than fine dining is what we like
  • Day trip over to Capri - There's a small bus which goes between the top and bottom of the harbour. It used to be 1 euro but don't know what it is now. Fastcat in morning and last one back at night. It's good to wander around the Harbour area but use the funicular to get up to the top where all the shops are.. Easy to walk back down. Bus from Capri harbour to Anacapri (don't even think about walking. It's not far but you'll see why!). Chairlift to top of monastary. Visit the Blue Grotto, small boat from the harbour to entrance where you transfer to a smaller boat which actually enters the Grotto (you need to duck down). You can also hire a small motorboat and sail yourself around the island. Fun moving across the harbour entrance where all the large boats come in through.
Trains are cheap in Italy. Get the train a couple of stops along from Sorrento - cable car to top and there's a dining area/cafe there. You canb get an organised trip from the booth outside the station but you can do it yourself if you don't want the whole package.
    Bus along to Positano -
Train along to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Stop at Pompeii is adjacent to entrance. Herculaneum you'll have a short walk down the hill
In Sorrento you won't be short of rustic places to eat. Wander through the streets and see what you fancy.
    Gelato - yum yum yum
    Enjoy your trip and explore
  • We went to amalfi on a bus on a Saturday . Three hours later we arrived. Should have taken just over an hour. Nightmare. Good views but thousands of cars and buses. Amalfi is nice looking up but looking out to see its a car park and bus terminal. People were swimming around a harbour. Wanted to see it but won't be in a hurry to go back. Positano nice. General thoughts are that the whole area is too commercialised. Never been to an area so over populated with people, cars buses and bikes. Must admit the views are stunning just ignore all the bad bits
  • Ravello is amazing, I think if you go to that part of Italy, Ravello is something that you will enjoy all 3 days even if not seeing anything else but the view.
Pretty basic, but with stunning views is the Hotel Graal.
On holiday-time.co.uk it has a great price, about Ј85 per night
