A question about : 0T tax code really confused

Hello guys,
Today at work been told by the admin that my tax code is odd, it's 0T.

Been working for the company close to 2 years now and before I was self-employed. When I goggled it all I got was:
Quote:

Your Personal Allowance has been used up, or you’ve started a new job and don’t have a form P45, or you didn’t give your new employer the details they need to give you a tax code

Any ideas on what should I do, workplace wasn't much helpful?

Thanks

Best answers:

  • Has your tax code just changed to this or has it been this since you started there?
  • Thanks for the replies guys.
I've just checked some of the payslips and it seems like 0T been there for a while
  • does it go back the whole 'nearly 2 years'?
Maybe HMRC are claiming back unpaid tax from when you were self-employed?
  • Thanks once again guys, I'll call HMRC asap and see what's happening.
Once I talk to them I'll let you know what they said.
  • If there's nothing unusual about your situation then I'd say there's a good chance you'll be due a refund in excess of Ј3000 given that you've been paying 20% tax on the portion of your earnings that should have been tax free.
  • Hello guys,
I haven't had the chance the call HMRC from work yet but today got a letter in the post.
    With new tax code 527L.
But the wording on the letter once again confused me:

  • Hello guys,
So after 6 attempts to get through to HMRC I was able to talk to them and yes they had bad information about me. Got everything sorted and was told that my new tax code will be 1000L and mentioned something about me getting some of the tax back.
So thank you guys for the advice
  • CLAPTON - HMRC said it would be paid to my salary.
jem16 -I will try to find my first payslip and see if I had the 0T from the start of the job which I think was June 2013.
So for that tax refund I would have to contact them?
I feel so stupid now, I really messed it up. But now I do know to provide p45 when you start a new job to avoid the 0T.
  • You would probably be better finding your last one for that financial year (March 14) or your end of year P60. It is quite likely that your code would have changed between the start of your employment and the end of the tax year & it is the end of the year that you could really do with checking.
If you provided them with a P45 then that is good. If the P45 was from DWP after signing on, then frankly the chances of it being correct are slim - about 1 in 3 from personal experience.
  • But the lack of provision of a P45 should not have resulted in 9 months at 0T. Especially with RTI. Which leads me to believe that HMRC had/were given (by DWP? or current employer via what was P46?) incorrect information back then..
I suspect it is the ex-self employment which will turn out to be the problem as they have thought that there would have been a self employment income using the tax allowance up in full.
OP did you need to file for self assessment for the tax year 13/14? Are you sure your requirement to file has been stopped? If you are not then you need to look into this as there may be fines!
  • Thanks guys for all the replies and help, I really appreciate it.
I am looking through all the payslips and trying to find the p60 and the first payslip also get the actual date I stopped being self employed and started the work for company.
  • Ok here is what I have found out.
June 2013 - Stopped being self employed
    3rd June 2013 - Got a new job at a company
    14th June 2013 - First payslip, tax code: 0T
    April 2014 - Tax refund for self-employment 2012/13
    22nd April 2014 - P60 from new company, Final tax code: 0TW1 (2013/14)
    26 December 2014 - Payslip still says 0T
Last week - Payslip says 0T
