I have just had a letter come through the door stating Southern Water would like to install a water meter at my property. I do not have a problem with this and have known for a few months that it would be happening.

Hello all,

I moved into a new flat last month. I rang the utilities companies to tell them and the water company wants me to pay a full years rate by the 1st of February, even though I wasn't living at the property in April-July. They then say they will send me a new bill in April next year and as I am moving out at the end of June, expect me to pay those months as well. So although the tenancy is for 11 months, they want me to pay 15 months of water. Surely I should only pay for 11 months and not 15?

I've recently bought a house in the Yorkshire Water area.

The house has a water meter, but the previous owners were still billed based on rateable value.

The drainage & water search commissioned by my conveyancer says that Yorkshire Water would force me on to a metered tariff after purchase. The conveyancer drew my attention to this.

If you are being connected to a water meter, ensure you are there when they do it so they can do a water stop test. I was connected in 2012 and my bills increased from 5 cubic meters to 28 in two years. I queried it constantly, as I thought I had been connected to the cottage being renovated next door. Eventually, this week, they tested and found I was right. Their map had shown my house in the wrong position. The problem has been sorted and they have been brilliant, but only because I went to the top!

A question about : Surface water drainage charge

Hi,

My water bill contains an charge for Surface water.

The roof of the house has conventional gutters and downpipes which drain to a public sewer.

The property has a large concreted parking area and private road, which drains to a farmer's field adjacent (and below) the property. There is no soakaway or similar - the water just runs through a hole in a wall and onto the field.

Is there any prospect of obtaining a reduction in the surface water charge because of this?
