Over 50s Money Saving

A question about : Passing money on to the children

My mother (62) would like to know if there is still any way of passing property on to her children for them to benefit in the future, rather than being forced to sell later in life to pay bills for care homes etc should that arise.
My mother has been ona low income of Ј3,000 pa for years as a single parent to us all and wants the most out of the only money she has which is tied up in her house.

Any advice??

B&Q Focus DIY Rosebys give 10% discount on a certain day each week but I'm sure there are many more. Can anyone help or are you all too young?

A question about : Income From Savings

I am writing on behalf of my mother who is 70 years old.
When my father died she was given a small pension which these days is next to nothing. Ј 16.00 per month.
She gets her normal state pension.
At the moment she has Ј2000 tied up in 'granny' type bonds which give her a quarterly return.

A question about : Small Stamp & Even Smaller State Pension

Just wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction go get more info with regards the national insurance small stamp (married women) and the pittance of state pension.

My mum worked all her life, was advised to change to the small stamp and now finds her state pension entitlement is a pittance.

I'm sure I saw somewhere that women can get a higher pension if they don't have full contributions based on their husbands contributions - but would appreicate more info.

A question about : Selling property

I've just read a message from someone regarding an elderly person selling a Ј200,000 property and moving somewhere smaller.
I have just inherited a property and was thinking of renting it out.
However, it has been suggested to me that I should sell it, buy TWO smaller properties, and that will generate TWO lots of rental income!
Anyone like to comment or advise me??

A question about : Pay lump sum off mortgage or not?

Am wondering whether to pay a lump sum of Ј15k off my Ј45k mortgage.

The Ј15k is with Cahoot (5.5%), the repayment mortgage fixed rate of 4.25% for 2 years and in it's first year.

A question about : Immediatelt Vesting Pensions

I am completely new to this - so I really hope I am asking this question in the right way!

I have heard about "Immediately Vesting Pensions" as a way for over 50's to put the maximum annual contribution into a stakeholder pension (by getting the government to top it up to Ј3,600), then immediately 'vesting' this pension - giving you a 25% tax free lump sum, and an annuity for the rest of your life.

I wonder if anyone out there has done this or has views on it as a strategy.

[/img]My mother is in her 80's and tends to have heating on a lot more than normal. I heard about Staywarm, originally run by Eastern Electricity whereby you can have unlimited fuel for a fixed amount. Although she has no gas she still managed to save 50% on her elcetricity bill each month, the cost being about Ј30 a month. It depends on the number of bedrooms you have how much the cost is. May now be run by TXU but worth searching for Staywarm on Google.
