A question about : Does the Argos Store Card protect loss from theft?

Hello. My first post on the forum, so I hope it's correct.
A friend of mine bought a Ј250 TV after Christmas by taking out an Argos Store Card to take advantage of interest free repayments. Last week their house was broken into and the TV stolen. They can't claim on their contents insurance as the excess is more than the value of the TV. So, they now have a debt to pay on the store card, and no TV. I don't think they can claim under Section 75 as it's for theft, not faults etc. I know most credit cards give purchase protection against theft as standard for up to 90 days, but I can't see anything in the Argos Card Terms & Conditions. They used to offer a PPI type insurance years ago, but dropped that and I don't know if it was replaced with anything.

Can my friends claim against the card for their loss, have the TV replaced, or have the debt written off?

Is the theft technically from Argos, as the TV hasn't yet been paid for in full?

Thanks in advance for your replies and advice.

  • the answer is no to all your questions........unless you chose "coversafe"
Can I insure purchases that I make using my card?
Argos Coversafe Insurance could cover your purchases for up to 365 days against loss, theft and accidental damage. For more details please read the Policy Summary. You can select the Coversafe option during your application
  • Some credit cards offer purchase protection for up to 90 days, which covers stolen items, however I don't think Argos credit card is one of them.
  • So there's nothing that springs to mind that would help them in this situation? My friends currently rent a property. They only bought the house (where the theft occured) last year, with a view to retire there. As such, they haven't moved in full time, which is why the TV was the only thing of any real value worth stealing. Could they claim for the TV on the contents they have on the rented property (their main home), as an item 'away from' or 'outside' the house, as I believe the excess on that policy is lower?
  • Argos offers two different credit products. The very popular Argos store card and the lesser know about Argos credit card.
It is safe too assume given the mention of the interest free term that your relative has taken out the store card. Although the store card is a credit product it is they are treated differently under the law too credit cards.
Sadly, one thing for sure is that Argos does not offer theft insurance for TVs- unless a separate product was taken out with them at the time of sale. Even more sadly for your relative is that they still have too pay the money back on the Argos store card that they borrowed. As far as Argos will be concerned they have upheld their end of the agreement.
  • Thanks everyone for the replies.
