A question about : Debt

So, my husband and I have a credit card and it's in his name (but I also have a card).

He's been at sea for last few months and I finally logged into his account to look at statement. We owe around Ј6,000. Although, I did pay Ј700 off straight away. I probably owe next around Ј1k.

I'm a stay at home mum at the moment - we have two children and another on the way.

Money wise my hubby earns around Ј40k per year and we get child benefit plus about Ј100 a month from my ex in maintenance.

We do have a big mortgage, we pay Ј900 a month but we rarely seem to have any money left over at the end of the month! Which I know is ridiculous as we are in a lucky position financially (I think).

I'm starting to get worried though because hubby leaves the navy next August, so we need to get this under control now just in case he doesn't earn as much or even takes a short period to secure employment. In addition we need to remortgage at the end of next year and now I'm not working and with the new stricter rules I'm frightened we'll be stuck with this mortgage and a massive monthly price increase.

Thanks for reading.

  • YNAB. Start a free trial, take control and find out where your money is going every month. You won't regret it.
  • Agree with the suggestion to try YNAB. I was very scepticalo about ever paying for a budgeting app but I gave it a free trial as several friends sais it had changed their lives and they were right. It changes the whole way you think about money.
Your husband will need to be onside however. It's not possible for one person in a partnership to budget well if the other doesn't!
