A question about : CEX

Just thought I would share a laugh I had when passing a CEX shop during the weekend.
After all these sub 300 quid plus 2 games deals during Black Friday last week Imagine how amused I was to see that CEX had the gall to try and flog a used console with no games for Ј330!!! Who are they trying to kid?

Best answers:

  • They're trying to kid no one, they're trying to ensure they make a profit on the item - which like it or not is the whole point in business. Granted that's about Ј20 more expensive than it was preowned in Game last I saw, but the preowned price does depend on what they paid for it.
Then again, CEX's pricing is laughable at best - I wonder if they're still selling Minecraft preowned for Ј25...
  • Pretty much everything at CEX is overpriced and it's been that way for years
  • I remember them massively ripping people off at Christmas for the Wii when it first came out.
They are relying on all the shops running out of consoles and desperate parents coming in.
  • I have little love for Cex, they pay pennies when you sell to them and rip you off when you are buying.
Took a monitor into a branch last year as I didn't need it anymore. Tested it before taking it. They broke it while they were testing it and then just told me they couldn't buy it off me as it was faulty. It looked like some mindless drone had dropped it, but as you aren't present while they test items...
  • I just checked CEX again and the PS4 is now still unsold but at Ј290.
It may be their business model but I would seriously doubt the intellect of anyone who thought after Black Fridays' System plus two games offers they could shift a second hand PS4 on it's own for Ј30 more.
  • i've always wondered how you say the name of the shop. well C can make a S sound. dad i'm just going to the cex shop for a movie. lol.
  • I say it as if the letter are initials, IIRC it stands for Computer Exchange, so I say cee e ex shop.
  • A lot of things sold at CEX are way above market value, and they have in the past even offered more to buy something of you than it was available new. You really have to be careful what you get there, or you will find you've over-paid.
On the plus side they do offer a warranty.
  • Actually, although you might not like the CeX pricing, they are very transparent - unlike any other retailer anywhere.
You can go on their website and see what they will pay you cash and credit, and also what they will sell an item at.
Now tell me that Tesco, Asda, Argos or any other retailer will share their profit margin with you !
And the prices they sell (older) games at is often better than Game.
  • I'd say pretty much any second hand retailer's pricing is about as transparent as it gets - you can see the trade in price, you can see the retail price, the only thing you won't know is the overheads coming off the margin. Problem is from a customer's standpoint it's impossible to get a TRUE value of the profit gained on a product as the prices are liable to change on a regular basis on both sides.
There's also the question of how much is added to each product to cover the percentage lost in faulty stock - cos we all know that it's bound to happen. While you can attempt all you want to weed out stock as people bring it in, it's impossible to get it 100% spot on unless you knock back any discs which aren't 100% pristine - which would mean knocking back a good amount of potential stock.
Would love to tell you that you make a ton of money off games - but certainly if my memory isn't failing me it's not actually all that huge. I used to be paying Ј27-30 to suppliers per copy of a "full price" game between 2006-2010 & selling them for around Ј40 because that's the price customers would deem reasonable. (And this incidentally was a major UK retailer of the time - which is no longer a credible force in games retail following an administration period.)
Might look like a killing if you're seeing a game traded in for X but selling for Y, but it's not as simple as that. As for CEX's prices, some of it's reasonable, but large chunks of it are honestly laughable - Minecraft currently tracking Ј2 above the most expensive retail brand new price I've seen recently.
  • I dislike how the store overcharges, however, they sometimes have their uses for retro games. I actually got a DS game in there cheaper than I could get it off ebay. It's rare but they have their uses.
Problem is, it's where all the stolen gear ends up (sometimes). Someone who's in the police had their house burgled and when they checked the local CEX, most of it was being sold in there.
  • I told a man about to buy a pokemon 3ds game at Ј38,that he could buy it new in sainsburys at Ј32.98 but he was interested
  • I was in cex yesterday they where flogging a iphone 5 lightning cable for Ј8 that you could get in poundland round the corner. Ј8!!!! exactly the same cable
  • In the interest of fairness, I have used CEX a couple of times over the past couple of months to sell items to them for cash (i.e. not vouchers). One was an old xbox I no longer used along with a few games and the other was an original iPad.
CEX gave me about Ј2 less than I probably would have got on eBay for the xbox (based on recent sold items at the time) and they paid me at least Ј15 MORE than I would have got anywhere else for the iPad. I almost felt like I was robbing them for the price I got for the iPad (it hadn't been used for a couple of years and had ios5 so hardly any of the apps worked)
I would never buy anything from them though as they are vastly overpriced for dvds, games etc, nor would I trade anything for vouchers for the same reason but if you do your research then CEX 'can' be a good place to sell unwanted items (although ebay is usually much better for me.
    Just my two-penneth
