A question about : Where to meet people in Cardiff?

I'm wondering if someone can suggest good places to meet people and make friends in central Cardiff towards Cathays for little or no money?

By little or no money, I mean I'm broke and can't spend Ј30 a month on classes, I can spare enough to buy a coffee from a cafe.

By 'people' I mean not student related for preference title=Wink Also, I've issues with alcohol, so please don't suggest pubs.

I'm up for most things, but I guess it would be helpful if I gave some context:

I'm happy to volunteer, join a (really cheap) class, or learn something new. I have no problems talking to strangers, and feel comfortable with most crowds.

Pft... I like cooking, dancing (Proper dancing, not clubbing), animals (large/small, domestic and farm), gardening, knitting, longsword, arguing philosophy, 'books', pottery, BSL, RPGs (p&p). I'm good with computers. I can't sing...

I used run, and want to get into it again, but I don't like socialising with runners (I like to not have to try and make nice conversation with friends while looking like a dreadful sweat monster and cursing/begging for mercy from the universe under my breath title=ROTFL)

I've had a look at the meet-up sites, but the socials I've seen are all either fairly expensive or aimed more at dating (not that I'd throw a drink in MrRight's face, but that's not what I'm looking for right now).

There's lots out there for students, but I'm looking to meet people - single/married, with or without kids, in their 30's/40's/50's. I've lived in Cardiff for 3 years now, and I just don't really have any friends or social outlets.

There's a WI near me that looks good, but it's 2pm on a wednesday and I'm in work title=Frown

Meaning ideally at weekends, but I could do something in the centre from about 4 on weekdays.

Thank you in advance for anything you can suggest.

Best answers:

  • So there's nowhere in Cardiff to meet people that's not a pub or costs a fortune
You know, if I had a kid, there's a fair few netmums in the area ... no, wait... that's not moneysaving at all
  • Actually there are places which don't cost and you can meet ppl in Cardiff but it depends on your skills, wants and attitudes and your spare time.
There are lots of voluntary projects - there is friends of Roath Park and friends of Bute Park - yes, the volunteers may be older but might be worth exploring. This is gardening - they provide tools and gloves - you come dressed appropriately. There is another project which I believe meets Sundays to do stuff like clearing canals and brown field sites -may be worth asking at Cardiff Central Library.
You could volunteer at a hospital (UHW, Llandough - for instance the local radio stations and the help desk in the foyers are staffed by volunteers).
There are the various food collection services that need volunteers.
There is a vibrant community farming garden which I believe is at upper end of Bute Park which look for volunteers each Friday. (Gardening)
There is a Hindi temple in Crwys Street I think that cooks vegetarian and is looking for volunteers to cook and serve. Yes, the lot that parades through Cardiff shopping centre every so often. It may be worth checking about Seik temples too as they also cook and provide food for all.
Sport is a good starting point though some are associated with alcohol more than others but if you are sporty then maybe qualifying as coach or ref = club (This could be sponsored I think)
Do you play bridge? Don't laugh but if you good at cards and maths bridge is great (but can be political) for social interaction but is competitive. But the age is probably wrong side of 50.
Get a dog. Walk it. People make friends walking dogs - or if you cannot afford your own dog then look at walking a neighbour's.
Like animals? There are independent animal charities in Cardiff - maybe you could volunteer...
    Religious - biggest club ever......
Is there a local dragons and dungeons group? Or historical re-enactment group (long sword)? Have you googled?
As a D&D devotee like when it began (lol - yes am that old)I learnt that there are groups which actually enact the scenarios theatrically rather than just paper based.
There is the model shop in Cardiff opposite castle - forgotten the game but enact it out via models so if you are into that go there (may be too young!) but there are other gaming shops in Cardiff - search the arcades.
