A question about : when do you enter comps

i usually enter them the day or two before they end and was wondering if anyone had won by doing this or is it better to enter when they have just been put on.as ive had no luck as yet with entering them late

Best answers:

  • I enter them on the end day and had two wins this year...and just started comping in jan!
  • I cant figure out how to search for end dates so I just enter them as they come on the board. If you know how to get comps up by the closing date I would appreciate your advise.
  • I always enter the day before they end, and i don't usually get through the whole list either, but i do do well x
  • I work from the back of the list to the front slowly but surely but never seem to catch up. And i search for 01/01 or whatever, searching title only and untick search child forums, and enter all the ones on the end day. I've won a few things this year, but I enter so many I wish I won a bit more.
  • I enter by most recently posted, I've done end-by date comping before and prefer this method. For example at present I have entered or ticked entered even if I haven't on every comp on here!!!
  • i enter them the day they are posted
  • thanks all im going to try when just posted and maybe do a search fot the big comps so i dont miss them
  • I was wondering this myself. I enter comps early (day or day after posted) and hardly win a thing
  • I try and get ahead of myself with the end date method...so currently I'm up to the end of Feb for all the ones I want to enter....
Then, when I get home and the kids are in bed, in the evening, I go to the sort bit and go thread title, ascending, last day, and pick up any that have been added in the last 24 hours...
I also regularly go to the first page and enter any that catch my eye (especially facebook ones with 'like' targets)...
Once on facebook I have a look at any that friends have entered and if suitable have a go at them...
However as to wins...I have entered knocking on for 3,000 this year and have had five wins - two very small (mascara and a cuddly toy - both runner up prizes), some fishng tackle, a set of pencils for the kids and Kaiser Chiefs tickets which gave us the best night out we have had in ages...
So, in terms of effort to reward I reckon on over 500 comps and at least twenty hours effort to a prize - worth maybe Ј50..and this fits well with the statistics that others have posted on here in the past.
If I had more time I would enter more comps for smaller prizes but I only go for things for the kids and family....
However - and this is the big however - I couldn't care less about the time and effort - this is a hobby and gives me a chance to dream...I absolutely love it...maybe it's cos my first hobby is fishing and that involves much time casting baits out and hoping to catch a fish...sometimes you do and sometimes you don't, but the fun is in knowing you have set your stall and could get a bite at any time...
In my opinion, if you are worrying about not winning anything, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place...it should be a way of relieving stress - not adding to it!!
I love the fact that stuck in traffic on my way to work in the morning I can always allow myself a little thought about that 0202 number coming up on my phone...and coming home and checking through 100+ emails is exciting!!!
Comping gives me hope, and that is worth every second spent entering....
edit...and maybe it's weird but I love this (the IWIWIW) board as I absolutely love it when other people win stuff - never thought I would (and I'm still surprised that I never even get a jealous twinge) but not only does it help justify my obsession, but knowing how happy winning something makes me, I get a sort of referred happiness for other people that I have never even met, winning something and being happy because of it...and when a few people have won good prizes recently I have even felt sort of proud that it's one of 'us'....maybe we are the Charlie and The Chocolate Factory generation and lucky golden tickets are all....
  • I have several search methods.. I've been doing the ending soonest ones and am about 5 days ahead got to 28th Feb roughly.. I also search for the posts with the highest view count, to make sure I havn't missed on any popular/big/ongoing prizes. Then to get a change of scenery I sometimes check back on the daily posts back on page 1 etc and see whats whats and enter those I like..
A tip I have been using the last couple of weeks though..is to save a shortcut of the thread search at the end of the day when logging off.. eg if you have got to pg 157 and dont want to spend ages searching back for that place, save a shortcut. Then when you next get back to comping just use that link rather than having to re-use the search tools. You will find the page has moved a few pages as some more posts have been posted/or some deleted if they expired but clicking back a few pages is a lot less hasstle than doing a new search and having to work out what page you got to!
It's really interesting to hear how everyone does it! And I agree with gojoroan2007 - how lovely it is to read about what people have won.. it keeps you motivated to go on during a dry spell and even though you may not win it is just as nice to hear of other people's happiness and good fortune
    Happy comping!
  • I normally go through the competitions list @ Hotukdeals every 1-3 days. I jot down the ones I enter so I know where I have left off.
  • I do a mixture
I go to the front page first - check what interests me the most on those and do those for the next few pages.
Then I go by end date. Manage to keep a couple of days ahead the finishing date like this and hope fully this means I don't miss out on any of the ones that I really want.
I also do a search for ITV, Daybreak, Real deal Ipad's etc at least once a week just in case I've missed out on any of the big one's.
I would agree with what the other posters are saying in that on average you are going to enter a load of comps for sometimes little gain so if your only doing it for the winning you are going to find yourself getting very fed up quickly because at the end of the day it's all down to luck and you can go a month getting lots of prizes and a month getting none.
  • I have a mixed way of entering. Some I enter as they appear on the board. I usually check the first ten pages when I come on and then I switch to end date and go throught the ones ending soon (am usually a few days in front but always go to ending on the current day in case theres new ones I have missed)
  • I usually enter the day before the closing date by using the 'Search this forum' button and entering the closing date, e.g. 25/02. I also use this method to find any competitions by keyword if I'm looking for something specific. I've done very well, lots of small prizes, an apartment holiday, a years bus pass (worth over Ј400) and a couple of weeks ago I won Ј200 on the Buzzword competition. I love entering the comps and as I'm retired I can afford to spend a fair bit of time doing them - and I love hearing about other people's wins, it spurs me on no end!
  • I go by end date and try to keep at least a couple of days ahead in preparation for the last day of the month, if I start falling behind I just avoid some of the DVD comps to catch up again.
  • I never have time to enter all the ones I want to, so I end up doing a hotch potch of things. I used to like the old likeability view, so that I could do the ones with bigger prizes. Sometimes, I will enter all the competitions on one site when I am logged into it. Sometimes I will dip into regulars for a change. Sometimes I will do those ending the next day.
The good thing about the green ticks is that you can see which ones you have already entered.
I also search out competitions on twitter and have had quite a few wins that way, but small prizes.
I probably only enter about 10% of the comps that are posted.
