A question about : We made a very expensive mistake

Just a word of warning. We made a very costly error when booking our flights to Salzburg. We fly out for our ski holiday this Saturday 21st Feb and return a week later on 28th Feb. The tickets were booked 4 months ago.

My wife was printing off the boarding passes and noticed in horror that we had booked the return flights for March 28th in error.

I know that this is our fault but it is so our of character for us. We have booked many flights over the years and something like this is unheard of for us.

We immediately called Jet 2 and fortunately they had seats available on the correct date. There are 4 of us travelling and we were hit with a whopping Ј300 bill to make the change.

A great deal on flight tickets wiped out by our stupid error.

  • That is the problem with February and March, with 28 days in the first month, the same date appears on the same day on the following month which won't occur with any other two following months. Sorry!
  • I suppose the bright side is you noticed now and not on 28th Feb? We live in paranoia about doing something like this, also very careful, but there's always that chance that we'll have a moment...glad you at least got it sorted and can enjoy your break.
  • My wife and I always triple-check (at least) the dates on our flights.
    The worse thing I've done is book her a ticket via Moscow to join me for a holiday in Egypt (while she was still over there), and found out afterwards she had to get across Moscow from one airport to another to connect flights.
    Her birthplace has its own regional airline and they use one Moscow airport, but the national airline she was using for the second flight uses another.
    Luckily, she made it with the Moscow "Tube" and airport express trains, but it was worrying.
  • Ј300 is a lot of money but it could have been a whole lot worse - think you might have got off lightly. One of those things we all dread
  • We all have the same worry... and it's easy enough to do, even if you think you've triple checked. My worst one was not recording the date of travel accurately on our calendar, so I thought I was travelling on the Sunday, not the Saturday (picking up my son after work experience in France, and going on for a holiday together). I only realised when I answered the phone and he said 'Mum, where are you?' to which my reply 'the kitchen' has haunted me forever as a long-standing family joke.
    I was, though, extremely lucky, as my booking was for a ferry - and Brittany Ferries were fabulous. They squeezed me onto the next ferry and didn't charge me a penny extra. I've never packed and driven for a ferry so fast before or since.
  • Yes, it's an expensive mistake to make but anyone who travels regularly will have similar stories to tell. If you are looking at prices on multiple websites it is very easy to click the wrong button. It's just something you have to put down as a learning experience.
    American sites can be especially confusing due to their date format and their habit of having Sunday as the first day of the week.
  • An expensive and unfortunate error - but I have made a similar mistake, but thankfully realised early after booking and the amendments were not as costly.
    Like me, I bet you now check EVERY reservation detail before pressing a submit and pay button in future...........I certainly do!
  • I fill everything out then get my partner to come and double check before I press "order" - then its his fault if its wrong
    I still live in fear and had that real sinking feeling a week ago that I'd booked flights back on the wrong day but we hadn't - it was just time differences affecting the departure/arrival times of connecting flights.
