Present for my Brother

A question about : Present for my Brother

Evening all

My little Brother has just passed his selection and should be joining the Royal Engineers asap. It is his 21st in October and I would like to get him something memorable but also useful.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be. I have thought of a watch but is there something else that someone serving cannot live without or suvive with the MOD issued one?

Thank you

Hand in notice or PVR?

A question about : Hand in notice or PVR?

Hi. My situation at he moment is that i'm 6 monts away from completing 22 years service (plus a year and a bit for the queen title=Mad ). I am currently signed on for LOS 30 but have decided enough is enough. What is the difference between handing in a PVR or handing in notice apart from the obvious 12 mth PVR time and 18 mth notice time? Are there any benefits/pitfalls from taking either route?

National Service allowance

A question about : National Service allowance

I saw a letter in a national newspaper from a person who said that they get a small allowance for having done National Service in the 1950's.

Does anyone know whether this is a rebate from Inland Revenue or from DWP? What are the criteria and who can apply - is it just the national Service personnel or can their next of kin receive it?

Thank you.

Widows Pension

A question about : Widows Pension

A word of advice for those who were serving in the 1970s !

In the 70s the rules concerning Widows' Pensions were changed. Prior to 01/04/73 your service earned your widow one third of your pension, after this date you earned half. Those in service at the time were given the option to buy back the difference for time already served. I decided not to do this as the sum needed for the buyback seemed not to represent good value for the increase in widows' pension.

A question about : Martin might be pleased it's working.

My daughter and her fiance are in the Forces, so when I read about this latest edition to the Forum, I thought I'd forward the info to them both. Today I received an email from my future son-in-law and Martin might like to read this section:-

Off shore bank acc.

A question about : Off shore bank acc.

We will be having our 22yrs lump sum paid to us soon, and i was wondering if an off shore bank account was the answer to stop the taxman getting hold of it. we will be emigrating when it is paid but we want to keep it this side of the water to gain interest.

Any ideas?
