A question about : Tuesday 3rd September

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big stuff that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free. .

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending title=Top

Morning guys title=Wave opps I should be jumping in the shower not starting the thread! Hope everyone is doing well title=Smile

    *tootles off to update signature*
Ziggy, I never manage to sleep much before my first night shift - think most of us have the same problem!! I exercise loads and try to get the adrenaline to pull me through - most of us crash by 4am though! On the plus side, it helps me sleep through the next day if I'm really tired coming home in the morning, which makes the second night shift much more bearable!! x

  • Morning all - thanks for the thread today DNM hope the bathroom foraging goes well - do you have a reclaimation yard near you - ours sells baths/toilets and sinks for a Ј5 each - often they are new.
Sleepy here just couldnt' get to sleep so plagued the world of blogging with random rubbish and finally got off. Its quite fun really getting back into it (and free!) and I'm trying to find a book deal (really that bit is a joke but wouldn't it be fun to get paid for wittering)
I'm on a Ј50/month grocery challenge - but we need flour.
Banks to check as my wtfc is still not sorted out.
Working and dog walks to do
Meet up with a chum later but combine with a work trip to other job (college) and see if the evening class I'm running is going ahead and raid fishboxes for veggies including more tatties
Tea is frugal meatballs which I've done 4 portions off and trying to eek out to 5 by sneaking some for my HM lunch.
Need to see if I can do more 'I do' admin
Set up wholesale account for edible 'wedding' woodland
Try and walk 5 miles today
Charge phone at work - thanks for reminding me of this
Hang up Hokey cokey to ensure it doesn't get washed twice
Weigh self and see if frugal fooding has allowed any weightloss yet - my wedding frock fits - I'd just like my cheekbones to be at the ceremony too. - just the same
See if I can pay some off CC
And BANK work cheque when it arrives in my sticky paw today.
Not sure what else yet - hoping a NSD or a LSD as really do need flour - I've milk just turned and I must either freeze it or make scones with it.
Have a good un and happy days today.
Now - where to find a publisher
ETA wtfc have put a meagre amount in my account - as fearer its really not much but I guess that means its been processed.
  • Just wanted to say I read this thread everyday and I think it's great, it keeps me motivated and interested in moneysaving!
  • Morning all,
Feeling a bit better today which is just as well as I've got lots to do.
    The List:
Get a lift with OH to next village then walk home. Need some fresh air, even if it is drizzling out. OH is on a free IT course s'afternoon. It'll be good to have some time apart!
    Checked accounts. Fine.
Listening to digital radio this morning to hear Rich Whitehead whom I'm following on Twitter (@Marathonchamp). This guy's running 40 marathons in 40 days on prosthetic legs; much respect. Get the most out of my TV Licence fee.
Check utility company have changed my Direct Debit amount from Ј100 to Ј80. Yay, they have.
Repair blind cord I broke last night. Done. It's really stiff, will need to find a solution to this. WD40 perhaps, though the smell of that lingers.
Renew library book online to avoid fine.
Harvested last of the potatoes, just a handful, but better than nothing.
Lunch is a drop of defrosted, leftover chilli for OH and a drop of leftover lentil soup for me.
Put Ј10 of petrol in and not a penny more!
    Offers:
Buy four Chicago Town Deep Dish pizzas with the Free offer packaging on them> Enter a code online> Print a document> Get a voucher for one pizza (Link)
  • Hi Money-savers,
Well, that horrible weekly 'To do' list is still sitting on the kitchen dresser sort of looking at me balefully, but I have crossed off quite a few bits today, some of them money-saving, others just general jobs. Feeling quite positive that I shall have a productive afternoon.
    Small money-saving things today:
*Last of this week's laundry done overnight on Economy 7 tariff, 30 deg, half powder. I try to keep to 2 loads only per week as my energy-saving ideal, but not always possible when bed linen & large items as well as clothes, etc)
*All line drying outside.....warm day here.
*Saved hot water from breakfast kettle in flask for mid-morning coffee. Took seconds to boil. Must make this a regular habit.
*Mascara tube back in a mug of boiling water to soften it today.....mascara lives on!
*Meals as per meal plans - h/m spicy chicken pizza using rubber chicken & salad/veg from garden.
*Stew made from more rubber chicken, leftover gravy & the chicken stock I made yesterday......kicked in veggies which needed using up.
*Post Office mission - posted all ebay parcels, paid in cheque, then went to Co-op to pay in dividend points from loyalty card. Our Co-op has stayed regional & so runs its own dividend points scheme. You can spend them in the shop as cash, or pay them into a little account to save them up. We save ours as we get enough over a year, with the Christmas bonus, to pay for 2 weekend festival tickets :-)
*Useful visit to local farm shop - 500g stewing beef for Ј3-91....thought that was good, as will serve 4 people generously, also found some bargain chicken pieces in butcher's freezer.....always worth rooting about in there.....& an out of date bottle of posh cold-pressed rapeseed oil in the 'Everything a Ј' bin.
    Still to do:
*This afternoon's big job is to carry on tarting up the newly decorated lobby/loo without spending any money. I spent ages scrubbing the floor on my hands & knees yesterday & it came up like new. Going to oil the pine door with the last bit of extremely out of date walnut oil which I kept forgetting to have on salads, but works a treat on wooden doors!
@mmm - Congratulations on the birth of your new baby......you sound busier than ever!!
That's me for today. Love to everyone. Keep your mitts on your money,
    foxgloves x
  • The List 2
Investigate changing quarterly TV Licence payment to monthly to make it more manageable. Can't! They want four more months payment up front before changing it over; I'm already paying three months ahead! Apparently this is "policy" as they class the licence as a "permit" not a "service" and can therefore legitimately require "permit holders" to pay up front. Unbelievable. Can I cancel it off my bank account and my OH take out the licence out on her bank account to avoid this? Nope, we're both named on the licence. This is news to us.
  • Hi everyone,
    Thanks for starting us DNMS.
Ziggy - Hope today goes well.
    Today's plan:-
  • Making use of free water & cake at work
  • Staying in for most of my lunch break to avoid spending
  • Food from stores
  • Dinner from meal plan - Smoked haddock & veggies
  • Log calories & exercise on free apps
  • Checked birthday bingo
  • Check online banking
  • Check for new mystery shopping opportunities
  • Enter some comps
  • Do some surveys
  • Declutter & flylady
  • Buy a block of pole classes tonight, Ј60 but the cheapest option available
  • Go to Sainsbugs after class & stick to list, planning to use our prepaid giftcard (5% discount) & make use of some coupons. If I stick to the list it should work out well & pretty much on budget
  • Check emails for reply from mobile network, they've not refunded me the Ј20 unlock code fee as far as I can see, but I'm not receiving paper bills & my online account is showing my old account, not my new one & I can't seem to change that myself as I transferred the number over too!
  • Have a great, MSE day everyone x

  • Hi everyone
Oh Zigster - I hope your colleagues are around to help - don't go putting pressure on yourself to get everything done.
Pip - I think you should self publish! What about e-book publishing??? You should check out Leonie Dawson - she's got a free download on her site about how she made $$$ from her blog. Yours is fab - I love your writing - I'd buy your book.
Ally - yip, v annoying up front but it would get better after a few months. Is the upfront monthly payment not about the same as what you would pay for the quarterly payment though? I thought that would work out about the same. I might be missing something though - things are going over my head today!!
    Here's me:
Continuing crochet project for pal's baby
    Bit of voluntary work
Prepping/Advertising my new class starting tomorrow
Pondering some more about my long term business plan…
    Packed lunch
Took pooch out a walk at lunch time - not shopping or paying a dog walker
Tidy around somewhere in the chaos that is home sweet home - maybe try and tackle the utility room again
Changed dog food on subscribe and save - chicken is now cheaper than lamb so the hound can try that
Checked other things on subscribe and save - getting more important now I'm embracing carless life…honest
List watch on ebid - thanks ALLY for the link to that site - looks much better than e bay
    Big love guys.
BTW - my 4 year 'anniversary' of being on this very thread has just passed! Can't believe how long I've been part of this. It has helped me so much (even though someone looking in would say that it hasn't as my debts have recently gone up instead of down…) - I can't imagine what mess I would currently be in if I'd continued spending Ј5 a day on lunch at work, Ј60 a month on make up and toiletries, another Ј50 here and there getting my nails and hair done and god knows what on clothes and shoes.
  • I'd like to contribute retrospectively to what a money saving day I've had! Free paper using I coupons, free blackberries from local foraging, old mattress listed on gumtree, washing on the line and a NSD to top it off. Woo doing well today!
  • The List 3:
Picked blackberries while out on my 5 mile hike. Free fruit and entertainment.
    Treated wasp stings(!) with vinegar.
Dinner was burgers made from oddments.
Electric alarm clock off during the day.
    Quote:
  • @ally - I had a similar sort of thing with TV licensing a few years ago. We pay quarterly & I wanted to change to paying monthly. I phoned them up & the conversation went something like this:
Me: Hello, I currently pay my licence fee quarterly & I understand it's possible to pay monthly.
TVLP (That's TV licensing person): Yes, that's right.
Me: I'd like to pay monthly then, please.
TVLP: You can't change your payment arrangements at this time. You have already paid two payments.
Me: Yes, that's because we are half way through the year & I currently pay quarterly. I'd like to pay the remaining 6 months' worth of licence at 1 payment a month, starting next month.
TVLP: We can't do that, I'm afraid.
Me: But you've just confirmed that you do offer monthly payments.
TVLP: Yes, we do, but you need to wait until you receive your new licence THEN you phone us as soon as you get it, & we change your quarterly payments to monthly ones.
Me: But there's absolutely no way that you can do that now.
    TVLP: No!
(In the end, as my debts shrank & my budgeting skills got stronger, I left it as it was, but I can't see the logic to this......sounds very 'jobsworth' to me).

  • *Stopped myself buying a Ј279 coat.
*Walked by the coffee shop and waited until I got home despite feeling a little thirsty.
    *No wine with evening meal.
*Had a cheap dinner of pie and chips that we'd been meaning to eat for a while.
  • foxgloves It's all a giant revenue raising charade if you ask me.
