A question about : Telemessage

DH and I have spent the last few days attempting to sort out our debts having taken the ostrich approach for the last few years.

We have a letter that says Telemessage at the top, what I assume is a reference number and the following:

The above account remains unpaid. Please call xxx between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and between 8am and 6pm Saturday to make payment in full.

Failure to contact may result in your account being sent to a debt collection agency and/or a County Court summons

In the tiniest writing known to man the bottom says Instructor to send via BT - NPower

So I am confused. Is this in regards to a BT or N-Power debt? I know we owe both of them money but I have contacted them. Should I phone this number to clarify or ignore the letter?

Best answers:

  • I think this will be your npower debt. Do you recognise the reference number?
From your other thread you seem to know the balance owing to Npower and have contacted them. If you are setting up some sort of debt management plan, then I would just send them your offer letter.
  • It is a different reference number, one I don't recognise.

I can only imagine it's an old letter?
  • Ha that is exactly what it came in, it is dated the beginning of July.
  • For those nostalgia freaks, a 'Telemessage' was the revised name for a textual message originally called Telegraph (GPO) or Telegram (PO). BT retained this loss-making service and rebranded it Telemessage, but there were no urgent courier delivery, it was simply printed off remotely and put in the post.
BT eventually gave up on this, and a private company bought the rights to the name - in the belief it would give the communications they sent some importance. However, few remember what Telegrams/Telemessages were, so the importance angle was lost.
Now, it is relegated to just a few utility companies who hope the Yellow envelope will be opened and acted upon by the recipient. BG even used to make a Ј14 charge for sending one, but it was usually refunded if you complained.
