A question about : Taken phone line but not broadband

Help

I signed up to the post office before Christmas, when nothing happened I called to discover my order was cancelled due to lack of MAC code (NB they didn't ask me for one)

Re-instated the order with original terms and had an email that change of phone took place on 6th Feb, called them today to find out when I would be getting a router to discover my broadband order had failed

When I asked why I was told they didn't have a reason and it would need to be passed to an investigation dept.

OK does anyone have any experience of this as I live in an area where only two suppliers provide broadband alone at an extortionate cost.
The original supplier was Orange, so my phone is now with the post office and my broadband is with orange

  • Why do you think you are limited to only two broadband only suppliers-there are dozens.
    What exchange are you on?
  • SueP19 - I am having a similar problem to you with PO Broadband and have only the phone service and no broadband after 3 months of communications with the Post Office support. I have submitted a MAC to them twice and each time changeover has 'failed'. I am now told that I need to cancel my existing broadband service with TalkTalk before adding broadband to the PO service, because of a technical incompatibility between the services, and this will result in a 10 day break in service!
I have not seen on any supplier or comparison website that this procedure is necessary. Most say that you have to provide the MAC and the new provider will do the rest and changeover will be seamless.
I know that my local telephone exchange is not LLU and can only handle DSL Broadband and that is one of the reasons why I chose the Post Office on this occasion.
Does anyone know the technical reason for this nonsense and does it apply to all broadband providers when a change is requested?

No its not normal seems to be a TT / PO problem .
  • Ironic, considering that the PO broadband service is supplied by TT!
I would suggest in the absence of any LLU providers that you switch to a decent non-LLU provider such as Plusnet.
  • Thank you guys for your comments and advice.
I have checked again broadband availability at my location and it seems to be a choice between Plusnet and Orange. Orange is favoured as I am a EE mobile customer. However I've been down the EE broadband application route before and received a message that the package is not available in my area, even though the comparison site says it is. Anyway I will try again.
I also have to take into consideration that I have already paid for 12 months line rental to the Post Office.
  • Orange/EE are still saying that broadband is not available in my area.
Here is a copy of what is available at my local exchange from SamKnows.com:
    Quote:
  • Reads as BT are the only supplier in that exchange .

  • Orange/EE are talking nonsense (no change there then). There is clearly broadband available in the area, as the line will support 3.5Mbps-not fast, but adequate on what is a small rural exchange, from which you are probably quite remote. What that BTW message is telling you is that there is already a broadband service on the line-which is your existing TalkTalk service.
Do yourself a favour and apply for your broadband service from Plusnet. It's pointless using TT on a non-LLU service, as you will usually be paying a substantial premium. I see no incentive to use the dire EE service just because your mobile is with them, unless they are offering you some bundle reduction.
  • Sorry for the delay in reply, we have no internet now and I was at home last week
Update, Orange followed procedure and commenced cut off proceeding on 6th February. My understanding is that PO failed to "order" my switch on with Open Reach, had a huge row with them
They have promised to have me up and running by Friday 27th !!!
PO did explain to me that as Orange and PO use TT broadband they can't do an effective switch over that Orange has to be completely cut off before they can take over....................after all the lies I have been told I basically told them it was rubbish and lodged a complaint
  • Well it looks like a broadband SNAFU situation!
I checked with TT and received an email stating that they are an independent company and not linked to the Post Office.
Before Christmas Mr. MSE was recommending EE as a very good value provider if you were a mobile customer, however that seems to have disappeared. I think the deal is only applicable if the local telephone exchange is LLU enabled, but of course they don't mention that.
I can't find a Plusnet package that offers a financial or other advantage over what I currently have with TT so I guess I'll keep the present arrangement for now and hope that the PO technical issue is sorted in the not too distant future.
  • Update my PO order, it has failed again. They have raised a technical "ticket" result NO broadband on Friday, it can't have come at the worst time
They have told me that TT provide their broadband
  • I have received an email from PO today confirming that their broadband service is provided by TT.
It is almost beyond belief that PO cannot take over the broadband service from TT, particularly when I am already with TT, without all the fuss.
Can anyone explain in engineering terms what the technical problem is here?
  • The technical problem is TalkTalk. They are useless.
I had an AOL customer lose access to the internet, TT said they modem is probably faulty so sending them a new router/modem.
Whilst they waited for that i went up and had a look, Internet worked fine, it was only the access to AOL and her login.
After several calls to TT someone who have never heard of AOL and didnt have a clue howto access an AOL customers account.
Eventually i got through and found they had scrambled the users passwords for RECEIVING a dodgy email that they thought looked dodgy and didnt even open.
Password reset and all back up and running. But scramble an account for receiving a dodgy email. I was in shock.
