A question about : Switching to BT Infinity

Hi All
I am in the process of transferring to BT Infinity due to the terrible speeds I am able to obtain from Tesco Fibre. Applied online and was advised that BT would take my line over from 20/2/15. Got a call today as BT have cancelled my order as I stated in my application that I wished to retain my existing phone number. Bt advised that I cannot get BT infinity without obtaining a new phone number from them. I have already got my MAC code from Tesco and can't understand why I can't retain my existing tel number. Is doesn't state this on the online app. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks

Best answers:

  • The number may be a bank of numbers owned by Tesco on their equipment in the exchange. I know my parents have a number with Sky beginning with 0191 6 on an exchange which is actually 0191 2 with BT.
So some providers do indeed have their own numbers which can't be transfered.
  • The number was originally a number I was given a long time ago by BT ?
    Thanks
  • What you want is not unreasonable basically porting your number from Tesco to BT given that the number was BT ported to Tesco in the first place, I would suspect you need to chat with a knowledgable BT employee , on line, over phone or whatever, you do see sometimes BT Rep's on here, or maybe post on the BT Community's forum, they seem to have a better understanding than some of the call centre employees
I know people who have been with Sky and Talk Talk and done exactly what you want to do, so it really shouldn't be any different for a Tesco line
  • As above, in light of that I would request speaking with a manager and explaning the situation.
It may also be worth giving Tesco a call and get confirmation from them as to whether taking your number back to BT is possible.
