A question about : Still don't have death cert

My mum passed away on Monday and we still don't have her certificate I am going out of my mind!

As my mum had a procedure within the last month they need a doctor to review her file to see if the coroner needs to intervene and they still haven't done it.

I can't do anything till we have the cert so I'm trapped in limbo. We want the funereal in Scotland where my mum lived and where all her paperwork is but I'm stuck in Nottingham where she died until they get their butts in gear

So annoyed

  • Hi Faith,
I am sorry for your loss.
The time is not unusual. If an operation or the like has taken place, the doctor is duty bound to inform the Coroner. It is then up to the Coroner to decide whether the Doctor can sign a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, or whether he wants to look into the circumstances further.
This is a safeguard when medical procedures have taken place to be sure that everything is in order, and why the patient died.
I hope this helps, and I am sure it will be sorted soon

  • Hi Faith,
Is this a Doctor at the hospital?
If your Mum had a minor procedure then they should report the fact to the Coroner shortly after she died. I know on your other thread you state it was sudden, so I cannot understand why they haven't sought advice from the Coroner sooner.

  • Well that's good at least you will be able to pick it up soon.
I was a Registrar of Births and Deaths for 25 years so dealt with Doctors and Coroner's Officers on many occasions, and our Coroner's Officers were always lovely and helpful. They were even involved when my Mum died but allowed the hospital doctor to sign the Certificate.
Faith if you think I could help please pm me, otherwise all the very best to you. Once you are able to arrange the funeral you will feel not quite so helpless.
    Much love

  • You can certainly start arranging the funeral. Crematoria are busy at the moment as more people are dying than usual this winter probably due to flu so it might be an idea to book a slot. Your funeral director will be able to suggest a date that allows enough time for the paperwork to come through.
  • Yes, the death has to be registered in the area in which it occurred, so as Tony says you wouldn't be given any documents until it was registered in the correct RO, not even the form for the Funeral Directors, so you would be as well to bide your time until Wednesday.
I know it seem never ending, but you will be given everything you need then.

  • Hi Faith,
    How are you doing?
Have just read your first post again and I see you are taking your Mum back to Scotland, so your Funeral Director will need to obtain an Out of England form from the Coroner, but this is just a formality, no problem they will know what they are doing.

  • my husband died the day after your mother, I was told that the coroner can take quite some time. Mine was quick because my dh donated his corneas and had a pm at the same time. I was told that the report would be quicker and that the coroner was sympathetic to relatives of donors. Your wait does not seem unusual. You need some other paperwork with you when you register and money
  • I learned about the death of my brother on the 7th Feb and I am hoping to pick up interim death certificate on Thursday from Coroner.
  • Inkie, I am sorry for your loss, it must have come as a shock.
If the Coroner is issuing an Interim Certificate that would indicate there is likely to be an Inquest, so the Interim Cert. is issued to allow you to deal with some formalities whilst the Coroner is making his/her enquiries leading to the Inquest.
    Hope that helps
