A question about : Something to be said for winter

I love this time of year because suddenly I can get sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and broccoli, all economical and versatile. In the summer it's all salad, salad, salad, until we are sick of it.

Any other reasons to be cheerful as the nights draw in?

Best answers:

  • We eat sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and brocilli and salad throughout the summer ? why would you not?
  • This is a lovely one for the arms, bogof babe.
I love sprouts. I also like snuggling up watching a dvd while it's cold and wet outside. And I love the wind. Especially when it howls or whistles.
And I get burnt really easily in the sun, so another reason to love this time of year. And the leaves and...
  • I can answer that for the OP. She is eating with the seasons, which is the natural way. That is what we do because we go with the flow
  • Love walking through woods and kicking all the leaves up.
The sea at this time of year is facsinating(sp?) can sit on the pier for ages watching it.
Shutting the house up against the dark and cold.
Hate the wind makes me really grumpy.
By February though start to get SAD and long for the lighter nights and sun.
  • Boots!!! I love getting my boots out of storage for the winter.
  • I'm a great broccoli eater, glad of it because they are the healthiest vegetable on earth.
Also I like the autumn colours when I walk across the park and along leafy roads. I don't mind the early darkness and love the feeling of getting home after a long day in the cold doing my surveys.
For some reason, home feels more like home in the cold season, especially if it's raining and windy outside. A hot cuppa or a glass of wine, good music, or good friends around for a chat...
And of course the best of all of them: my MSE friends!
  • Thanks Kittie, I was wondering how I was going to answer that . It's true though - we tend to live on veggie burgers, veggie hotdogs, veggie quiches, the occasional pasta conconction (OH isn't too keen ) in summer, mainly because you don't have to have the oven on for long, and salads just seem to be the natural accompaniment.
Having said that, I am not sure what veggie meals we will have through the cold weather, but it doesn't seem quite so odd to have a hot veg when the winter draws on.
GR if you want to move this thread to The Arms then please do so. I posted it here because winter veg is cheap and cheerful - which of course OS'ers already know! Also in The Arms they sometimes don't seem too interested in discussing matters culinary - can't think why... .
  • Another reason to love winter is that you can wrap up warm in snuggly jumpers, scarfs, gloves and comfy boots when you go out.
Or not go out and snuggle in front of the telly
  • Also...pate on hot toast on dark Sunday afternoons
  • I get to wear my lovely fur (fake of course) coat which I adore!!!!
  • Good one Skintchick - you have restored my faith in The Arms. Some of you do actually post about foody things .
Sorry, a bit OTT with the smilies, but I was wondering whether the move here would be the death of my thread .
  • An excellent winter food from Northern Italy is Polenta con Funghi - a sort of thick, almost solid maize porridge served with a porcini (cep) mushroom sauce, usually done with freshly picked plump ceps. That warms the cockles of one's heart.
And washed down with a glass of strong red wine? Hey girls you haven't lived.
  • Ah, but will it go with my broccoli, carrots, cauli or sprouts?
