A question about : Scrapbooking thread

Hi, at the minute I make greeting cards and I want to get into scrapbooking. I thought it would be nice to have a thread similar to the card making one where people can share bargains, tips and photos of their work. As a complete novice I could do with a bit of advice and inspiration. I was thinking of subscribing to scrapbook inspirations magazine as you get a free gift. I wondered if the magazine was any good, and whether this was worth doing?

Best answers:

  • I like the Scrapbook Inspirations magazine Melissa. I don't subscribe but if the free gift is something you would use then it's probably a good deal.
There is a forum called UKscrappers that is really good and you might want to check that out, it's a great place to get inspirations and find like minded people.
What size where you thinking of doing?
  • I had a mad moment and bought a few mini accordion kits - by K & Co., they were quite a good price, but I think I should have had a go first before spending loads of money. I'm worried now that I won't be any good at it. I wanted to give a few as xmas presents.
The deal in scrapbook inspirations was a large K & Co. kit that had a couple of mini albums in it - it looked really nice. Do you often get freebies with the magazine itself?
I also wanted to try decorating notebooks, boxes etc with scrapbooking supplies, have you done this before? I would love to see some of your pages, so that I can see how its done, I've just got to pluck up the courage to do it myself now. I have just sent a load of pictures off to be develpoed, I uploaded them on the photobox website (and got 40 prints free for registering), so I'm waiting for those to come back!
  • Hi Melissa
You don't tend to get any free gifts with the Scrapbook Inspirations mag anymore, they use to do them often but then just stopped them.
I love to decorate notebooks, these are nice to give with journal jars, I did quite a few of them last christmas.and make my own mini books. Have you had a go a maze books they are really easy to make out of a sheet of 12 x 12 card and make great gifts. I will try to find out how to upload a layout or two for you to look at as well.
Photobox are good I use them, and they normally deliver them really quick.
  • My Mum got me a digital camera for my birthday so I took loads of pictures of my kids. It had a function on it where you could turn the photo into black and white, so I did that and I am hoping when I get them back they will be develpoed like that. I thought these would go nice in a scrapbook for my Mum.
I saw a thread somewhere for Photobox, I had never heard of them before, and I got Ј5 cashback from quidco for registering, so I got quite a good deal. I don't have a printer so I was saved a trip to the Asda to get them done.
I saw some fabulous kits by k and Co. for making frames and address books. My favourite was a hannah file folder kit. The papers in it were gorgeous! Just the sort of thing my Mum would love! Do you have a particular favourite company whose products you buy? I saw another offer for papercraft inspirations magazine where you subscribe and get a free Laura Ashley kit that I am also tempted by.
Thanks so much for all your help so far!
  • Hi melissa, I've used Photobox/ Orange photos (same company) and have used Snapfish recently - really good company, great choice of picture sizes and photo gifts and got some great offer codes on MSE site too. Cost less than getting them done in the supermarket and they get delivered to the door .
Have you got your scrapbooks yet, started anything? How's it going?
  • Meant to say above that I gave my dad his scrapbook of my boys on Thursday and he thought it was great! Really pleased he liked it. I added some stitching to the book (names and DOBs in backstitch on fabric) which made it seem even more 'homemade'.
  • Glad there's a thread for this. I've a whole load of photo albums I want to re-organize into some sort of order (holidays, grandchildren etc.) and thought about doing them 'scrapbook' style if you know what I mean. I need to get some more books or albums and I can get those bit by bit ..........did think about ring binders and decorating them a bit so any ideas I'd be grateful for.
  • Rainmac - I still haven't started yet! I think I'll be making cards today. What with father's day tomorrow, then on Monday its the other half's Dad's birthday and OH's grandad's birthday. So I've got to sort 3 cards for us to send, then the mother-in-law needs 3 cards too - aaahhhhh!
  • Found this site today https://www.cardcraft-uk.co.uk/index.php and they stock loads of K&Co papers, embellishments etc, pretty good prices and free p&p on everything (as far as I can tell). I've ordered the K&Co Rough & Tumble scrapbook pad, chipboard letters and a set of embellishments to get me going with door hangers for boys. Should have loads of the paper left to also get me started with a scrapbook of my own. Think this will have to be an after Xmas project!
  • Thanks for the link rainmac, I've saved it to favourites so that I can check it out later - I love anywhere that offers free postage!
  • rainmac Journal Jars are just jars (I found coffee jars are ideal and you can decorated them or ikea also do some cheap nice jars if you want to buy some) filled with strips of paper with journal prompts, simple questions or challenges written on them. You can make them match the person who your giving it too, ones i've done are
Disney questions for someone who been on holiday
Family history questions for relatives (sneaky way of getting info this )
Different layout challenges for a scrapbooker.
If you google Journal Jars you will get alot of ideas come up, this is a good site to start with

I've had a rough week this week so not got any crafting done apart from a card for dad for fathers day. Could someone tell me how to put photos in a post it will have to be a simple explantion, nothing is working in my brain at the moment.
Melissa have you done any scapbooking yet?
  • Thanks for the link Mrs Bones, will def have a look!
Sorry you've not had a good week We've had preschool sports day and big school parents induction meeting. Am all schooled out , got loads of forms to fill in and uniform to buy - prices of badged stuff are and the quality isn't all that to be honest.
  • Mrs Bones, there are instructions on this thread post 784 onwards for adding photos. Looking forward to seeing yours soon!!!
  • Hi All Scrappers
Was just wondering if anyone would like these.
I have been having a root through - there is a free skip in our area so having a late spring clean and came across a scrapbooking pack.
Its only a sheet of a few little bits baby related in nice pastel green and yellow. There are some nice little bits on it and i wondered if anyone would like them. I never got into scrapbooking myself but brought them to do a scrapbook of my son but then found a lovely baby book so instead have used that.
There is a nice little written bit saying 'there is nothing more precious than stealing a kiss from a sleeping baby' and like i said some nice little frames etc in it. Seems a shame to get rid of it as it is totally unused and unopened.
Free to a loving home if anyone would like it - first to pm will have it on its merry little way today
    Sam

  • MrsBones - yes I made my first scrapbook and I loved It! There's a couple of pics on the craftyxmas2008 thread, should I post them on here too?
I have been very naughty! I went on a splurge. I bought some of the Laura Ashley papers and embellishments from ebay. Then last night I ordered more stuff! Don't know where I am going to put it all, I'm afraid I am getting carried away!
The 1st scrapbook I did was meant to be for my Mum, but now I have decided to give that one to OH's Mum and make another for my Mum using the Laura Ashley papers.
  • Hi sammy, you're so lovely offering the pack to someone. I'm sure it will get snapped up by one of the nice people on here. If not, why not sell it on ebay?
  • Rainmac, yes I think I do need to control myself - but I can't. HELP!!!! You are lucky getting all that K & Co. stuff. It is more expensive but the quality and designs are gorgeous! I think its always better to get a range so that everything co-ordinates! I'll post some details later of where I got some bits from as they had some cheap stuff in the sale!
