A question about : Salty Bacon

Fried bacon today and it was so salty it was inedible. I had washed it in cold water before frying. Has anyone a method to A) determine if bacon is salty before cooking, other than licking it, yuk, and B) removing the salt. Would blanching help?

Best answers:

  • Have you tried putting pepper on it?
  • Buy quality dry cured, really does make a difference, you get what you pay for.
  • We had this problem too even with fairly good quality bacon. We found that soaking it in a bowl of cold water for an hour or so first worked
  • Oh no we've been censored again
  • I've made my own dry cured bacon a few times. Good results.
  • A little shop near here still does the bacon slicer joint method.
Oh, it is Bacon to die for, it stays the same size in the pan and the taste is worth the extra 30p for 7 slices.
  • There are unsalted bacon??

I don't want to boar anyone, but too many here sow discord by hamming it up at every opportunity. Boy swill be boys, but we all know who the gilty ones are
  • Too many swines on here.
  • Can't see how we have insulted anyone! The question was a fair one, money saving by not buying, frying and binning! Anyway, thanks for all your comments, both light hearted and serious, very helpful.
  • Have you tried Fermanagh Black Bacon? It is so good!

  • If your bacon is too salty it's usually a sign of being frozen
I rarely buy bacon now but when I do its dry cure. A lot more expensive but seeing as it's not full of water it holds its size so a slice of back does a sandwich where as a supermarket brand may take up to three slices
  • Have a read of the ingredients for your 'bacon' (you never told us where it was from) - has it actually been smoked, or is it just swimming in flavourings?
