A question about : Quotes for new combi boiler

Hi, any advice on the following quotes for a new combi boiler (getting this under green deal - Ј700 cashback for the boiler + heating controls title=Smile). Also need one P+ 1100x500 radi replaced.

All are inclusive of VAT. Boiler is to replace a fairly knackered, 12-ish year-old combi, 24kW Ferroli Modena 80E. Heats 6 radiators and a mixer shower in a med-sized, fairly cold, 2-bed flat.

- First, quotes from the npower regional contractor including npower's Ј450 'discount':

Ideal Logic+ 30: Ј2,200 - 5yr warr
Alpha Intec 28X: Ј1,900 - 2yr warr

Not really a lot of detail about these quotes tbh as just assumed they would be a rip-off, I think I'm prob right...?

- From a local RGI:

Worcester Greenstar 25Si compact - Ј1,900 (5yr warr) + Ј100 for Magnaclean + Ј130 for radi

Vokera Compact 29A Ј1500 (5yr warr) + Ј100 for Magnaclean + Ј130 for radi

- From another local RGI:

Worcester Greenstar 25Si compact - Ј2,200 (5yr warr) includes magnaclean and radi would be fitted at cost

Alpha Intec 26c - Ј1,960 (8yr warr) includes Alpha's own magnetic filter system (this accounts for one of the extra year's warr) and radi fitted at cost; could have boiler installed with Alpha's own jig system, cost Ј200, for additional 2 yrs warranty on top of 8 yrs)

-----

I've a third local RGI giving me quotes on Monday so will update then.

My thoughts are:
- the Vokera compact is a poor boiler based on reviews/anecdotal evidence online
- the Worcester is the best one here and 1900 + extras seems good for this
- the logic plus 30 is bigger than I need
- the Alpha Intec 26c is a better boiler then the Intec 28X and the 8-yr warr is pretty appealing... so I hear the parts are more expensive but if it's under 8yr P+L warranty then so what?! The only prob is the price seems a tad high... the boiler is Ј750 inc VAT not including flue kits compared with about Ј870 for the Worcester but then the Ideal Logic+ 30 is Ј775, a new radi should only be about Ј45. Also the 2nd RGI above is a family-run firm, 'platinum' installers for Alpha hence the longer warranty, on the end of the phone all day/eve/weekend for any problems too, fit a lot of these boilers so know the setup etc.

Any thoughts, and should I negotiate on the prices - is this the done thing? title=Big

  • Thankyou very much for your reply
I have heard the same about the Alpha parts but if it's under an 8-year warranty I won't be paying for them myself... my thinking is that any company prepared to stand behind its product for 5, or even 8 yrs must have a reasonable amount of faith in that product and it should be pretty reliable or they will be making a fat loss on parts/repairs...
  • Yeah I think the Worcester are a good make and the price + extra's looks ok. Still I'd get a couple of quotes more just to be certain, mind you what about a Vaillant boiler ? I had my boiler fitted from a local firm after getting some quotes in. stl heating provided a vaillant boiler, magnaclean and a powerflush for less - yeah I was told a powerflush is vital for getting rid of any bits in the pipes/rads before fitting a new boiler! I might be worth checking on that I guess.
  • Negotiate on price for sure!
Is this a straight swap, or are other works involved?
  • Only one error there. The Ideal Logic is the best one there in mid range boilers. If you want to pay Worcester Bosch money get an Ideal Vogue. Its a real piece of quality from what I've seen of it. 30kw will just give you better hot water. 24/25kw combis always struggle in that dept, but don't go any bigger.
No I don't work for them etc etc. I do install a few though and people love them, and the service is outstanding and the warranty is 7 years if you buy a Logic Plus, and it has a great little screen that tells you what its up to in English, not some code numbers. Spares do not cost a fortune either, not that I've needed any so far. And its made in Yorkshire....so who can possibly resist???
  • I would go for Worcester Bosch, Vailliant, Baxi - they will never let you down. Baxi has great service!
  • If you choose a Worcester approved installer you get a 7 year warranty
