A question about : plastering cost for one wall

I need one wall five metres long plastered. I took off wallpaper and it took the plaster with it plus fireplace and shelves were taken out leaving bare bricks and mess.

Plasterer has quoted Ј200 but that seemed dear as I had researched on here and had a mind it should be nearer Ј100. I wondered if the extra cost is justifiable for the bare bricks and the fact some needs skimmed and other bits need more plaster ie on brick bits?

Best answers:

  • I think you estimate of Ј100 is nearer the mark, without seeing the job i would say it wouldnt take mor than 3 hours to do. The Ј200 estimate is on the steep side. Im a dryliner/ plasterer so speak from experience.
  • Sorry have to disagree:
    2 bags multi finish:
    PVA
At least 1 bag bonding/dry line ahdesive (dependant on dry line versus traditional)
    Scrim for any cracks visable.
If boarding the cost of board.
Not gonna be much left out of ya Ј100 to make it worth turning out.
Again we could argue all day as to pricing of work and without seeing the job its hard.
    No offence just my opinion.
    Plasterer also.
    Sorry for confusing the issue.
  • Most good palsterers in the south east charge around Ј50 a square metre. Once they pay for materials and pay their taxes this starts to make sense.
  • Plasterers i have used charge a daily rate of around Ј250, on average they can do four walls of a room or one ceiling in a day.
So i would guess that whether you got a plaster in to do just the one wall, or all the walls in your room, the price would be pretty much the same.
I did get around this problem once by paying cash in hand for plasterer to work on a Saturday morning - so he didn't have to put it through books, and he also wasn't losing out on any 'full day' jobs that came up as he didn't normally work weekends.
I'm in London by the way, so rates are probably highest.
  • Ohhohoho - Whereabout in London are you? I am in North London and also looking for a plasterer to do a whole room, could you PM me your plasteres' phone number please, Ј250 a day sounds like a good deal! Thank You!!
  • On small jobs like that you will struggle to find a quote for £100, as cargo say's pay for all the materials and you haven't got much left for a days work. You couldn't skim straight on to the backing plaster any way as you have to leave it to set, this can take 4-5 hrs in its self.To be honest £200 aint that bad.
And it looks like someone else is on there way for a ban too.
  • Ј100 - never ! 3 hrs is certainly pushing it, and dare I say it? perhaps not a professional job:confused: I have to agree with cargo the material costs alone would be eating into the Ј100 not to mention that it would be unlikely that the plasterer would be able to do any other jobs that day taking into account traveling time, cleaning down and setting up.
You have to pay the daily rate I'm affraid - personally I would not do it for less than Ј150 + materials, any less and I would simply walk away.
  • I must defend the plasterers here, even though some are off my Xmas card list, except my pal Jason ofcourse
But like OP says,he has to pick the gear up, he still has to set up, lug his gear in, sheet up ( the last lot I saw didnt know what a cloth was let alone a sheet)
Do the scrimming, PVAing, knocking up, flinging it on the wall, (sorry, I meant, trowelling it on the wall ) letting it go off a bit, smoothing etc.
Infact it does work out cheaper to have more walls done than the one wall, as by the time he's waited around for the PVA to go tacky, plaster to go off etc, the day has gone, and its too late to go off to another job.
  • Wow - it's cheap down here! West Wales quoted Ј250 for two big ceilings Inc materials. Ceilings are artex so it includes a bonding layer 5x6m ceilings!
  • In all fairness any plasterer that's half decent or actually good at there job are not going to do your job for 100 pound and if you can find someone to do it that cheap then fair play but the finish is going to be rubbish,I live in the south west and you can expect to pay from 200 to 300 on a day rate.as a plasterer my self if I did the job for 100 pound by the time it takes to get materials bring them to the job set up do the work pack up and tidy up,100 pounds would not cover half of my day.
You can not expect the job to be that cheap unless it's off a cow boy who goes from small job to small job bodgeing the work up and getting out as quickly as possible to make extra money.
Prices have also gone up on materials etc so you can never expect to pay the same on every job you have done or if someone has a simmalir job done don't expect the same price,I do not understand where you have got it should be ruffly 100 pounds to?
If it takes half a day to do the job expect to pay a full day rate or vet the plasterer who does it to do it on price but I'm not sure you will for suck small a job.
It's life you pay good money for good work cheap work is always a bad finish in the end.
