A question about : Petrol Lawnmower service

Can anyone advise me how to improve the running of my Mountfield self-propelled lawnmower (Ex B&Q). It has a B&S engine which runs very slowly.
I have enquired about service, but its cost more than the lawnmower is worth. I cannot find any books giving details on how improving the engine performance (or how to increase the speed of the wheels).
Any help or advise gratefully appreciated.
