A question about : Pardale V for dogs

I got some Pardale V tablets from my vet for my dog. She is already on Metacam which worked well for a few months then seemed to stop helping her.

The Pardale V was to be given as well as the Metacam.

I have checked out the ingredients and they contain 400mg paracetamol and 9mg codeine per tablet. The vet charged Ј44 per 100 tablets but their content is almost identical to co codamol (500mg paracetamol, 8mg codeine) costing about Ј2 for 32 at a pharmacy.

Is there any reason why my dog should not have those instead?

Best answers:

  • Dogs are very sensitive to paracetamol products, so I'd be wary of giving anything other than a vet-prescribed dose to your dog, especially with Metacam already in the mix. I realise that the vet's prescription prices do often take the mick, but I'm not sure I'd take that risk with my dog.
Google "dogs and paracetamol" and you'll see a lot of cautionary tales.
  • Where a licensed veterinary product exists, vets are obliged to prescribe this over any human equivalent. It's the cascade, and it can suck sometimes.
You could certainly speak to your vet about swapping and go with what they suggest.
  • It sucks for sure. If it's any help petmeds have them for Ј22 if you are happy to order them online with prescription from your vet. They'll charge for a prescription but should still be quids in.

  • We have been given Pardale by our vet recently and it was explained that they are not licensed for use in dogs and that they could cause harm, but as it was very much a last chance effort we went ahead, I think if you ask your vet they may well say its very similar to the human version, but you definitely need to ask them first.
  • Thank you Johnny my guess is they said something similar and I have not taken it in properly as it was a difficult time for us. I did have to sign a medical disclaimer before they were able to prescribe it for us.
  • The vet certainly didn't say anything to me about these tablets not being licensed for use in dogs! I even expressed surprise that paracetamol could be given to dogs and no comment was made that they may not be suitable.
I've been giving these to my dog for nearly 4 weeks now - every day as per vet's advice - so they better HAD be licensed for use in dogs!!!
  • Just type pardale in the product field (should auto complete) then dog in the species field and boom, you should get the result.

  • Took my dog back to the vet today. Vet said she is now in end stage osteoarthritis and has given her Tramadol to be taken as well as the Pardale V and the Metacam.
As the tramadol is not licensed for use in dogs I had to sign a form agreeing that this has been pointed out to me.
Vet says I now have to consider my dog's quality of life.
If her pain can't be controlled it may be kinder to put her to sleep.
I'm hoping this won't have to happen yet so praying the Tramadol willl help her.
  • Very sad indeed. Good luck with it and hope it does the trick. Always a sad time, but hopefully the medication can give a decent quality of life to enjoy some more time.
    Fingers crossed for you.
  • I think I mentioned it on a previous thread of yours, did you ever look into turmeric/golden paste as a supplement? It get some rave reviews, it helped my nan with her osteoarthritis symptoms too. Might be worth a try, it's going to be gentler on the body than lots of strong painkillers too.
Lots of other ideas for supplements here too
