  • Most insurance companies I've used have stated that a No Claims Discount expires after two years if it's not being used. So if you haven't used it to insure a car for two years they won't accept it.
Your 9 month's should be no problem.
  • Thanks V Much.
Morethan stated 6 months so I thought oh no! Different Criteria’s again.

  • I had a maximum no claims bonus.
Then I started driving a car under the motability scheme for disabled people (my daughter) which provides free insurance. This will last for three years after which I predict we will no longer be under the motability scheme.
I will then need to resume my insurance on a new car and am concerned that I will have lost my previous max NCB.
I asked my insurer ,and they said it would remain until I next needed insurance. However, I WAS speaking to a call centre in India so that's no reassurance. I'd best write to them and get them to document that they will retain my max NCB status.

  • Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, my situation is a little more complex.
The motability car has myself and my wife insured on it -not sure if anyone is the 'main' driver, but if so it would be her. We also have a second car - owned by my wife, insured with her as main driver, and myself as a second driver. (MY car, with me as the main insured driver has now been sold).
To make things MORE complex....wifey has already had a bump with the motability car, requiring a claim on the insurance!
Not sure how best to sort out the insurances. Perhaps when the insurance becomes due on the second car, I should take it out with ME as the main insured, thereby keeping my full no claims bonus (I assume I don't have to mention the claim on the motability car). However, I don't even know if there's a problem doing this bearing in mind that the second car is owned by my wife.
Thereafter, when the motability car comes to the end, my wife will have to ask for a note (as you did) confirming (hopefully) at least 2.5 years free of claims!
    Cheers,

  • You'll have to mention the accident if you put your wife on as an insured driver, but you should still be able to use your full NCD. I just did something similar, renewed insurance on my wife's car in my name and applied my NCD to it.
Doesn't your wife have NCD in her name on her car?
I suppose you could run her car in your name for one year, her name for the next year, and so on, to keep both NCD bonuses current and in effect, for when you have two cars of your own again. Can't see any real drawback to this.
