A question about : New line install charge when move from Talktalk to Plusnet ?

Im considering a switch from talktalk to plusnet but when i go through the online sign up process it says I need to pay a 49.99 new line installation charge ?

Is this right because I have been with plusnet before & they used the same physical phone line as Talktalk are using now

Or is this correct & something to do with 'unbundling' (LLU) ?
i.e. they are charging me for work that has to be done at, say, the local exchange to do the switch

Best answers:

  • Yup, there is physical work for Openretch engineer to do at exchange switching you over from LLU to BTW systems - make sure you register to keep your old phone number or PN will issue a new number.
  • Shouldn't usually be an issue with switch from LLU to non-LLU though, it appears PN are 'installing' a new line and charging accordingly.
The line doesn't physically change, but OR charge it as if they reprovision it. I'd query it with PN.
  • thanks for the replies
its also the same charge with the Sky online sign up process (cheaper at Ј20) so I suspect this is a talktalk issue
I have not spoken to anybody from sky/plusnet yet but my suspicion is that I will not be able to keep my phone number as Talktalk use there own hardware in the local exchange due to LLU ?
I suspect you cannot keep your phone number when you are switching between Talktalks hardware & BT wholesales hardware used by plusnet & sky ?
Im not bothered if I can't keep my number as only a small number of friends & family ever have it to make it easy to block cold callers - everybody else gets my mobile number which I can screen calls fairly easily with a call blocker app
  • Although OR do indeed charge service providers, it isn't anything like the figure Plusnet charge you the end user, but PN can charge you whatever they like, it's up to you if the overall deal is acceptable,or not.
You obviously don't need a 'new line' the cable pair and master socket the TT service is on can be reused for the Plusnet service (and probably will be)
There is a Openreach product to migrate LLU lines to WLR3 lines , which costs the service provider a few ЈЈ , you don't get a visit or an appointment just a date the work will be done on, that work is in the exchange only where they disconnect the TT equipment and reconnect you to Plusnet (BT WLR) equipment, but for some reason they don't always use this product but go for the 'new line' product instead
Although you are not bothered if you keep your current number or not, you could do this if you wanted, it would need the provider (Plusnet) to raise the correct type of order though
  • Are you also going to PN broadband as i know they charge for the for this
  • TT to Sky is an entirely different scenario, as that would be an LLU to LLU transfer-normally not possible, and certainly not by TT's clueless script-readers. In this instance they will normally provision you a new line and try to port the number to it. That is chargeable by OR, but whether the ISP paasses it on to you is up to them.
