A question about : New here

Sorry for the 'double post' but I just realised this might be better in here!

Hi Everyone

I was just looking for some general advice.

Me: Ј14,550 in debt - used to use PayPlan but stopped makingpayments in 2009 when I lost my job and ended up in various temp jobs (nothing stable) and letters go to my parents address.

Currently have another Ј16,000 debt with my partner (in his name). I know, I know. These debts arepaid monthly and up to date. The problem here is his work (and mine as I temp) is unstable so just 'our' debts alone, we struggle to manage.

I have always been looking into getting a DRO or going bankrupt for my debt as it was made before I got with my partner. I do not want him involved in sorting my debts. I have just completed some basic info for CAB in order to get an appointment.

My 'problem' is that my parents will soon be able to pay offmine and my partner's debt. The reason we are doing this instead of paying mine is that mine has been dragging foryears…it is an emotional stress but is almost forgotten day by day as I'm working to keep 'our' house and bills going.

If I get a DRO or go bankrupt I'm prepared for what goes along with this…..I earn a small wage and may end up with no work soon.

However - mine and my partners debts are up to date - but westruggle (Ј700 short most months if he hasn't worked) and if he was to go bankrupt, when he does earn they will take a lot! And like I said, no payments have been missed.

But morally tho (weird I know) is it wrong to know I'll becoming in to some money and deciding to pay 'our' debts, not mine?

We only have enough money to pay one lot - and making 'our'debts vanish will sort us out completely. It's not like I'm trying to go bankrupt/DRO my debts then live it upwith ЈЈЈ. It'll still be paying debt.

Thanks for any advice!

  • Hi dreaming big please post a statement of affairs maybe we can give advice, if you havent been making payments to your outstanding debts maybe they will take full and final offers ? thus allowing you to pay majority of your finances off and pay some of your joint off too ?
  • I don't want to sound patronising, but have you dealt with the root cause of your debt issues? From the post you state you ran up debts by yourself initially, and now you and your partner have joint debts which are crippling you.
I only ask because if you parents pay off your joint debts and you haven't dealt with the cause then you may end up in the same position a few years down the line.
(If the cause of your debts is due to unforeseen circumstances/death/serious illness and not living above your means over a period of time then I apologise.)
