A question about : Neighbours Roof Leaking Into Our Kitchen

We've had problems with our roof since end of October last year (we moved in in August). We've spent hundreds on having our part of the roof repaired and had a roofer out numerous times.

However, the problems still haven't been resolved, although it has slightly improved due to the work on our side. Our roofer discovered at Christmas that next door's roof and wall are in very bad condition (the first time he could gain access through downstair's flat to see it from a different perspective) and this is the reason the problems haven't been completely resolved. The only area left now to repair is next door's roof. We live on the 1st (and top) floor of a terraced house and their side of the guttering is bowing and facia board is rotten and has pulled away from the wall. Water is flowing into the wall and travels down to our side resulting in water leaking through the wall and into our new kitchen cupboards flooding the cupboard and work top every time it rains.

I've contacted our neighbours, they are also having major damp issues, but they rent so have to go through their landlord for everything. They have tried contacting him but apparently he's 'away' and they won't give us the landlord's details for us to contact him directly.

It has now reached stalemate and we no longer know what we can do. We chase up the neighbours every week or so but they just claim they can't get in contact with their landlord. It's been more than a month now.

I've tried contacting Citizens Advice but I sit on hold for hours and no one answers the phone. Is there anything else I can do?? Anyone else I can contact to get help and solve this?

Best answers:

  • Probably worth contacting the council / environmental health to see what they have to say on the matter.
  • Thanks Nicholas. I gave them a call and they couldn't help as it's a civil issue. I spoke to a solicitor and they've done a Land Registry search to find out who the owner is. She suggested I write to the owner explaining the situation to see if that gets us anywhere. If not, to continue sending letters informing them that we're going to take legal action. The only way this can be resolved (if they refuse to fix it) is to take them to court.
