A question about : Nectar is Changing means Sainsbury saving THEIR costs

The following two statements, relative to changes scheduled for 11th April 2015, were copied and pasted from Sainsbury’s website on 13 Oct 2014

1. What does this mean for you?
If you’re a Nectar customer, you’ll collect points at Sainsbury's at a rate of one per pound from April 2015, versus two points per pound at the moment.

2. Frequently asked questions
Is the value of the Nectar points on my card going to change?
No, the value of points is not changing, You'll still get Ј2.50 off for every 500 points.

Unless I have somehow misunderstood the above, Sainsbury are quietly reducing the reward value of collecting Nectar points and therefore slashing their costs and the benefit to Customers.

  • From April next year, Sainsburys will be cutting the number of Nectar points that we can collect in half.
As a loyal Sainsbury's shopper, I am very disappointed by this.
  • That is really going to tempt customers in to an already over priced shop.
  • I stopped loving nectar when the amazon vouchers stopped. Time to find a new credit card!
  • "At times like Christmas, we'll also be holding bigger and better Double Up events to give you great value when we know it matters most to you. "
So 50% less points per shop but they will occasionally give you double value (ie. what the points are currently worth).
The only thing they have missed off their marketing is the "new and improved" scheme to hoodwink shoppers.
  • More info here https://www.sainsburys-live-well-for-...r-is-changing/
  • I get all my points doubled up because I bought my house and contents insurance from them. It still doesn't seem to add up to very much!
I didn't appreciate the change from 1 per Ј to 1 per litre on petrol.
  • Yet another reason to avoid the worst of the major supermarkets. Near-Waitrose prices with Tesco quality.
  • Dont forget also no "Own Bag" use points..........is this something to do with charging for bags?
Yes-answered my own question 5p charge coming next year.
  • We will introduce a 5p charge on all single-use plastic carrier bags in England in October 2015. There is already a similar 5p charge on single-use bags in Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland will be introducing a charge in 2014.

    Does this mean "if elected"?
  • I have always liked shopping in S'burys and found their stuff to be good quality. Unfortunately their prices are getting silly, e.g. 40 pence for Basics tinned tomatoes. So, what to do? Our nearest Asd@ is like a bear garden, the 24 hour Tsco is ok but not keen on all their ranges or prices, no Morr1 sons nearby, no Waitrose ( couldn't afford to do whole shop there anyway)......I now do a lot of shopping at the German discounters with bits from Home Bargains, Sainsbugs and Tsco. Takes more time but worth it for keeping food bills down. I certainly agree the decision to cut the value of Nectar points is silly, it won't do them any favours.
  • They have also drastically reduced the points via adpoints which is mostly how I get my points.
It won't be worth the effort soon may just ditch it.
  • I ditched them a couple of months ago , they were my nearest supermarket & we found them convenient for lots of reasons including collecting nectar points. They just got so blooming expensive , I know they were never the cheapest but it just got ridiculous.
We now shop at a Lidl which is a fraction of the size but we manage to get most of our shopping there and save around 30% and get a few other bits at asda/Sainsburys or Morrison's and home bargains / b&m bargains , surprisingly now we have got organized it doesn't seem to take much more time .
  • Fortunately Sainsbury's is my least used supermarket so it will not affect me much anyway.
Also they stopped giving Nectar point on Spirits "Because of minimum pricing legislation", which is b0110cks. 10p's worth of points off a Ј20 bottle of spirits is not going to put it under its minimum price!
Also was it Sainsbury's that mistakenly put up a poster urging its staff (yes staff not colleagues) to persuade shoppers to spend 50p more?
Nectar is a durge loyalty scheme anyway.
  • That's a shame. Although compared to the rewards vs the Clubcard it was always poor I guess.
I rarely shop in Sainsburys though anymore & like others have said, get most of my points from Adpoints & the surveys.
  • Tight "bastids". 1/2 of one percent saved (well less, really because it's not on all spends by any means). My feeling/hope is it will cost them more!
  • I'm starting to wonder if Sainsbury's doesn't have a collective deathwish. I used to use its stores for about 80 per cent of my shopping but gradually defected as its prices rose. seemingly week by week.
Nowadays, I put up with the down at heel environment at a Morrisons for branded products at usefully lower prices, Waitrose for luxury products and the chaos of Aldi for really serious savings on staples.
Just what is it that Sainsbury's thinks it has to offer that is so compelling that it can chip away at one of its few remaining selling points?
  • And so that means we get less on our dual fuel that we have just signed up to - nice.
