A question about : Moving in with partner who lives in council house

Hi!
My girlfriend lives in a council house, and I am planning to move in with her but I have no idea about the the criteria and how it will effect her current situation.

Girlfriends circumstance!
council flat
Job seekers allowance
Has a 5 year old child

My circumstance!
Work full time earning 45k
Own 2 properties (one of which i am renting out and the other planning to rent out if I move in with my girlfriend) My two properties are far away her daughters reception and family, and are not suitable even for a small family.

Base on the above circumstances, I am not clear on the following:
Will she loose her flat, due to my circumstances?
Does she have to claim job seekers allowance? is this compulsory? Or can I support her financially if she does not want to work?
Will she be pressured to work by the government if I support her financially?
What else will be effected?

Some help will be grateful as I don't want to jump straight into her world if I know she will be financially better off without me!!

Best answers:

  • No she will not lose her flat. As she is on job seekers I am presuming she gets her rent and council tax paid for her, she will no longer be entitled to these benefits. Sorry I don't know about job seekers but I think if it is income based job seekers not contribution based she will lose this also because of your income.
However given your salary and hopeful rent of other homes I am sure you can afford to pay the rent, council tax and help support your GF if she does indeed lose the job seekers. However if she is actively seeking work (which I am sure she is given she is on JSA), hopefully she will have a job soon to support herself.
  • Hi Ricky987. Welcome to MSE.
As you are a newbie you may not have noticed that this forum is divided into different sections or "Boards". You have posted this question on the Stoozing: Free Cash from Credit Cards Board. You may get a better, more informed, response if you ask on The House Buying, Renting & Selling Board or The Benefits & Tax Credits Board.
    Good Luck!
  • I agree with mancitychick.
The council flat is hers as long as she wants it.
Nobody is forced to go out to work if they don't want to.
Any means-tested benefits she claims (e.g. JSA, housing benefit, council tax benefit, free school meals) will now be judged on your family income. Which means she won't get anything.
So she won't lose the flat, but you'll have to pay for it out of the household income (your wages).
She won't have to get a job, but she won't get any money to live on other than the household income (your wages).
  • Thanks guys for the advise!!! So to sum it up, my girlfriend can come off all benifits and is still able to keep her council flat?
  • Hi my partner & i are wanting to move in toghter. We have 3 kids. I live in council house with 2 under 16, and one at 18. My partner was selfemployed and paid tax & ni. He has been signed of work as he has uncontrolled epilepsy. I work 24hrs a week & receive family & working tax credit. I pay full rent & council tax. Would we benefit from moving in togther as really struggling just now with the rent & council tax.
