A question about : MOD Tax reclaims update

As an ex soldier i have looked into this a lot over the last few weeks.

The rules have changed since April however will be staying the same this year. Here is a rough guide.

Must have been on a camp for less than 2 years ( or expected to )

Phase 2 can now be claimed for ( this is any time after your first 12 weeks in the army ) Not sure about other services.

Their are 2 companies that provide this service

Rift who charge 28% + Vat

Forces money that charge 25%

I think for ease i would suggest Forces money as they offer a complete online service, and from feed back seem to be quicker aswell.

Over all 100% worth doing! Both advertise Ј2500 average claim.

If you youtube claim military tax claim there are videos with more information

Good luck with your claim title=Have

  • Hi Gav,
It would be good if you could expand this from just one service, include the Royal Navy (inc RM etc)and the Royal Air Force.
Posting up like this just seems like its advertising, which without the extra information it will just be deleted like everything else.
Can you also define the "2 years"... Does this include Change of JPA Assigments (i.e. an OOA Deployment for 4 or 6 months).?
That's a big one for us..
  • Hi Omega
I believe this also applies to Royal navy, air force and marines etc.
I was given a brief on this when i was getting out by our adjutant.
Yes a change of JPA assignment will also be ok.
However tours / STTT did not count as being resigned. However if you had been on 1 camp for 2 and half years and had been on tour / abroad for 6 months then you could claim.
I think the odd thing surrounding most of these claims is that considering it is Tax, there are more grey areas than usual.
If anyone from the navy / airforce could add anything i'm sure it would be helpful.
1 thing i know for sure is most marines can claim due to their constant drafts.
  • If tax is reclaimable you can do it yourself for a fee of 0% inc VAT, no point paying one of these parasites a single penny.
  • I was told if you were expecting to be at your base for more than 2 years (all mine were 3 year tours) that i was not entitled. Shame!
I was also at a base for less than 2 years but still this was no good so not sure where you got your info from?
  • the basic rule is the same in civvy street, its called the 24 month rule. If your place of work is permanent, or is expected to last more than 24 months at the outset (even if it doesn't) then it counts as normal commuting and is not tax deductible
if on the other hand you are there for less than 24 months (and do not exceed 24 months in reality) it is classed as a temporary workplace and so your journey to and from it can be tax deductible

  • I asked on the other thread if there was a simple "noddy guide" for doing this yourself, but I didn't get a reply.
I'll ask again, rather than giving some company like RIFT or FM a cut of the money, does anyone have a step by step guide as to how to go about claiming this money? I'm obviously quite keen to do it, but I haven't a clue what to do or how to do it.
  • This has now been covered by one of the first DINs of the year (2015DIN01-005: Reclaiming MAR Tax).
In a nutshell, as others have said, as long as your assignment was scheduled to last for 24 months or less, it is valid. I expect that actually this benefits the RN and RAF more than the Army as we have more 18-24 month appointments rather than long stints at base camps and Super Garrisons....
It goes into examples and formula guides for completion. You can knock up an EXCEL spreasheet fairly quickly - what takes the time is going through all your expenses on JPA to get mileage figures, etc.
Would definitely agree that doing it yourself is the way forward.

  • I am being thick, does this only apply to current serving or ex forces?
    thanks
  • No, it applies to anyone working in a 'temporary' workplace (temporary as defined by hmrc as intended to be for 2 years or less). It just works very nicely for some military drafts.
Would be interested to know more about Gav C's earlier comment regarding changes last April allowing phase 2 training to now be claimed as I have trawled the legislation and can't find any changes in regards to this?
Ps in my experience upo's are less than helpful!
