A question about : Missing 3-6months CCmin payments? what's theWorse that can happen?WORSE CASE SCENARIO

If you have been paying off the 'minimum' payment for some credit cards for years, but suddenly you cannot pay them (due to personal reasons causing your expenses to sore, and not have enough funds to pay them)

so due to this, you are unable to pay off the credit card minimum payments.

Here is an example

CC1 = credit card 1 with a minimum payment of Ј40
CC2 = credit card 2 with a minimum payment of Ј70

Oct - Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!
Nov
- Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!
Dec
- Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!

Jan - Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!
Feb- Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!
March- Paid CC1 Ј40 + Paid CC2 Ј70 - you have funds!
April- Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)
May- Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)
June- Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)
July- Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)
Aug - Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)
Sep-Don't pay Ј40, don't pay Ј70 (Due to insufficient funds)

Best answers:

  • A) Not a lot, a few letters from debt collection agencies. Generally I'd ignore them, personally. By this point your credit rating is shot anyway.
    B) More letters from the credit card/debt collection agencies. Ignore them. They won't send anyone round.
    C) Nothing at all, provided the bank account is not with the same bank as the credit card. For example, if you have a Barclaycard, and an HSBC bank account, then nothing will happen to the bank account. However, if you have a Barclaycard, and a Barclays bank account, it is likely that Barclays will take whatever money goes into the bank account, in order to pay the credit card. This is called the right of set off.
    D) By the six month stage, you are looking at no new credit for 6 years, and your existing credit facilities may be drawn down (I.e. closed by the lenders). See 'C' for what happens to your bank account.
    I hope that helps. It isn't the end of the world. Get a new bank account with a company who you do not have credit facilities with, and get your wages/benefits paid into that.
  • If and only if this situation is very transient and you have spare credit limit, use cash advances to draw out enough to the pay the minimum. For 1-2 months this is much better than losing your rating. With two cards, you can use one to BT to the other. Because of the fees involved this will increase your debt, of course, so best only if you can see your situation will soon improve.
  • When you get to the point of NOT HAVING FUNDS...
    Give them a call and explain the situation to them.
    They WILL work to help you.
    DO NOT BURY YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND AND HOPE IT WILL GO AWAY......
