A question about : Military Discounts

When the other thread started I was going to list them all for easy access, but never got round to doing it, so still don't know what companies do discount lol. Maybe one day ...

Really want to make the most of discounts so can anyone tell me what local shops do military discount, eg, river island, wilkinsons etc.

Any you know of?

Best answers:

  • the best place for discount is the USA.
Over here we get very little really. If you go through the forces discount book and see an offer you like. approach the company or shop as a non military customer and you can generally get a better than deal than is in the book.
  • Aye, Forces Personnel are 2nd rate citizens in this country. However, if your a work shy sponging student you get all the discounts.
  • Commentors are right, there aren't many that offer a specific military discount that's worth having. However, there are some shops that do.
Animal for instance offer either 10 or 15%, can't remember off the top of my head which it is. Burtons, Next and the like do too.
But tbh you can try everywhere, if you don't ask you don't get. I even ask when i'm in Burger King or McDonalds, usually it's something like a free cheeseburger or something, but some BK do give a discount.
With the profile of the forces quite high compared to the past, any negativity from retailers has a habit of making its way to the press and public.
  • Millets outdoor shop used to and some GAME stores do as well.
We always ask as the worst they can say is no.
  • krispy kreme doughnuts shops and stalls offer 30% off in the UK (well they defo do in portsmouth anyway) with military id.
  • I got 10% off in Millets at the weekend, which is normal, only they took 10% off already discounted items which they arent supposed to do, which was nice, although it is in an area close to large mil location.
I have asked for mil discount in places and got it - so worth an ask.
  • Where I used to work - in a bowling alley - it was horrible telling military personnel that we refused to give services discounts on a weekend. It was absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes we could get away with it and put them through at a family/friend or local businesses rates (which were cheaper than forces) but even then we had to see proof and it sometimes got queried. Was ridiculous.
  • Just wondering - why do you think Forces should get a discount? It's a bit of a strange concept. I understand that some NHS staff do, but likewise see it as a anomoly.
I'm not being critical - if there were discounts I'd take them. I'm just curious to know why - its not as if the jobs are badly paid compared to those on NMW.
  • SurreyBear,
If a discount is available, would you be a fool not to use it.?
  • I know Burton wouldn't give a military or NHS discount when I last went in there with my husband.
  • Clinton cards give forces discount although I cannot remember how much.
  • If you show your ID card at McDonalds you can get either a free McFlurry, cheeseburger or portion of fries. We heard about this ages ago but tried it yesterday and got a McFlurry.
  • All moto service stations do military discounts at all restaurants etc. I always make sure I stop at one with a Mcdonalds and Costa
  • All our local Nandos will give 20% discount. They didn't used to but would give oh a bowl of nuts or olives. Now they'll give the same discount as NHS staff get.
  • A friend of mine asked me what kind of discounts my partner gets, i told her nothing worth bothering with! hardly any of the main companys give any she was stunned! her partner is a police man and she told me he gets discounts in almost every shop and restaurant he uses.
to be fair, my partner is too proud to ask for discount, i think i managed to get him to use it in burton once (as thats about the only well known shop i know who offers it)
  • I seem to remember getting a room at the Hilton in York and it had specific rooms only for armed force personel
