A question about : Metacam for Dogs

How do you go about buying this off the internet?

I've looked it up and there are prices, but there a big sign saying Prescription only. So why are there prices?

Can you ask for a prescription from the vet and then buy off the internet? Will this annoy my vet? Does she have to give me a prescription?

She prescribed this for my dog about a week ago and there is still enough for about three weeks (she said she gave me a month's supply), but I just wondered if she needed more how to get it (rather than paying the Ј98 I got charged last week!).

Best answers:

  • You can ask your vet for a prescription but I believe the vet can charge for that. Were you charged Ј98 for meta am or did that include Ј30+ for a consult?
  • From memory on dog forums there isn't much difference between online prices and vet prices once the consult and any treatment costs are taken off. To answer your original question, yes you can ask vet for a prescription but probably not worth the hassle.
  • Mine charge Ј12 too. I'm the same, for things like long term antibiotics I'll get a prescription and order from petmeds who are normally pretty quick. If it's a one off then just take it there and then. Definite savings to be had but often you need immediate medication so it's not really an option.
As a tip, also make it clear to your vet up front if you aren't insured. It's worth having the conversation about finances in advance. Not saying vets bump up the bill, but they might go for gold standard if insured where it may not be necessary.
Same as krlyr in that all my flea and worming meds are bought online. Much cheaper and straight to your door.
