A question about : list of books to understand investment and pension

Does anyone know about any book that is practical in its approach in explaining how to invest and investment strategies, including pension? My financial adviser recommended one newly released on amazon called 'Saving and Investment Wisdom: How to take charge of your finances' by David Opoku, an experienced stockbroker and Financial planner. I got one and read it cover to cover (100 pages). It's really good and enlightening, but I would like to do further reading if you know other books please.

Best answers:

  • John Kay
    The Long and the Short of It: finance and investment for normally intelligent people who are not in the industry (2009)
  • Seems like too many to mention.
    I've got:
    * The Long and the Short Of It, as mentioned by kidmugsy
    * Smarter Investing 2nd Edition (I think there's a 3rd now), by Tim Hale.
    * The DIY Investor, by Andy Bell (of AJ Bell, has lots about SIPPs)
    On my wish list:
    * Your Money Or Your Life, by Joe Domingues, Vicki Robin, Monique Tolford (I think this one covers The Crossover Point, where income from investments equal your job income)
    * Early Retirement Extreme, by Jacob Lund Fisker
    * Debt Is Slavery, by Michael Mihalik
    * Common Sense On Mutual Funds, by John C Bogle and David F. Swensen
    * Bogle On Mutual Funds, by John C Bogle (Bogle, of Vanguard fame)
    * Your Money: The Missing Manual, by J.D. Roth (of GetRichSlowly fame)
    * The Intelligent Investor, by Benjamin Graham
    How helpful to you they are, I don't know.
  • Better off asking an IFA and reading official pensions info from your employer/pension provider and direct.gov.uk Books go out of date quickly.
