A question about : Kids Xmas, Tablet for Kids

Looking for some advice please...... DS had asked for an Ipad for Xmas and I feel hes just far too young and its far too expensive a gift for a 6 year old, so I have been having a look at the Leappad and Innotab... anyone already bought these and can give me some feedback on what to get and if its age appropriate? Thanks folks!

Best answers:

  • It might be age appropriate, but if all his friends/friends parents have ipads, it's going to be a waste of money, he'll be embarassed that hasn't got the real deal.
Not saying you should get him the ipad, rather you should wait until he is old enough and get something completely different.
  • The iPad will give far more benefit to him and last much longer and get far more use than the others. Sorry.
  • DD (also 6) has the leappad but much prefers using my ipad. The games and apps on the leappad are limited and very expensive some upto Ј20!
You can buy cheaper tablet computers than an ipad that may be worth looking into.
  • My 5yo loves her brothers ipad - and really wants one- my main concern in the screen so we are thinking of getting a cheaper 'proper' tablet - an android one probably. IMO leappad are a total waste of money and they are better of with a more epxensive item that will last longer
  • My 6 year old will be getting an iPod touch, same as iPad but smaller and cheaper!
I have an iPad and there is no way I'd trust a 6 year old with it, she would t purposefully do anything but is 6! as it is I have a scratch on my screen and I'm a grown woman trying to look after it
(completely ignoring the cost factor too here, no way we can afford one)
  • We're getting DS an ipad for Christmas, he uses mine and has so many good games and books on it - l almost have to prise it off him!
Alot of them are free and we've turned off 'in app' purchases so he can't run up a big bill (he doesn't know the password anyway but just in case....). He's allowed 2 apps a week that we pay for - if he remembers.
Is the leapster the ones that has 'plug in' games? Some of those can be quite a bit of money and that's what made my mind up, hte ipad will last longer and has cheaper apps in the long run.
Sorry to probably confuse you or not be any help.
  • Thanks for all the help and advice folks, I really think an Ipad is the best option, OH not too happy and thinks we are "spoiling" him if we get him one, but as has been said the games for the leappad are Ј20 a go!!
I have called the apple store this morning as I was looking into the Mini Ipad but apparently this is just a rumour mill at the moment and its not confirmed that this is def going to be launched.
  • My kids (both 8) love playing with my Samsung Galaxy S2 which is Android-based so have bought two Ј45 Android tablets for Christmas. Have checked them and both work a treat so an absolute bargain for both hopefully! The games they love work great as does BBC iplayer which gets used a lot (Tracy Beaker addict in our house!)
  • We are in the same dilema - tempted by the blackberry offer that is on in Currys https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/blackbe...ff~HotUKDeals~ and buying the kids one each. Then some on here recommend the Nexus as being much better. Hard to know. I am also watching the apple store for refurb ... some at Ј279 at the minute https://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad
  • i paid Ј110 on amazon for an android tablet recently and me and the kids are very happy with it. really would love an ipad but id go for a refurb one if i was buying one
  • Squeak got an innotab for her birthday, its quite good.
My twins (8 but autistic, in some ways they are more 4 than 8) love it and are having one for christmas, but they don't want the internet, just things like the photo suite and games.
DD1 will have a tablet of some kind, she is 10 and too old for the innotab, but she loves the word games on my phone so maybe a cheapy android.
Also I'm going to get my 4yo laptop fixed for them to share for homework etc.
Won't be buying an iPad though!
Eta the drawback of the innotab is that it runs on AA batteries, which it eats. We've had to get rechargeables!
We got one of the BB Playbooks, for my Xmas present and for my OU work and I think its great, although not many of the silly game apps like android or ios.
  • There are a lot of Apple Fans who are selling their iPad 2 devices to get the "new" iPad. Ipads are very hardy, and so a second hand one would work very well?
I would stick to one of the main operating systems - ie, Apple or Android to ensure a breadth of applications is available.
I have an iPad 2 and use it for all kinds of things (work & leisure). However, if he's only 6, I would make sure he does more than play on the iPad - he needs to run around of course!
  • how about the blackberry playbook or the new google nexus tablet? both look very good but alomost half the price.
  • A Ј400 gadget for a 6 year old? It's your choice OP but, personally, I think that's insane! If he gets things like that at such a young age, where will it stop further down the line.
I'm with the others, just buy him an Android tablet (they have loads on ebay in the weekly deals section), there are plenty for under Ј100 - chances are, he won't even know the difference!

  • My 5 year old (will be 6 by Christmas) is getting one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ls_o00_s00_i00
I thought it would be better than an innotab/leappad thingy as he can do more on it. He is very good as using the ipad, but I wouldn't consider getting him his own one yet.
The main plus with the above one is that it is Flash compatible, so can play cbeebies, moshi monsters (not that he plays that one) whereas the ipad doesn't. And the price isn't bad either.
A friend of mine on fb bought one as well, has trialled it to see what works, and she thinks it's fab. About 20 of us have now got them for our little ones.
