A question about : Incorrectly defaulted account

Hi
I took out a Buy Now Pay Later deal via Comet for a washing machine in 2012.
When it came to pay off the debt I missed the initial date and had to pay an additional amount for the one month's interest. So I rang up the company (Santander Store cards) and asked to pay off the full amount of debt which was Ј512 (paid with a Santander credit card) - this was 2013.

What I did not know is that the next month they (Santander Card Services) applied a Ј4 interest charge to my account, and proceeded to upload charges of Ј12 per month for 6 months and put this account as a default on my credit history. This is now stopping me get a mortgage (turned down by my current Mortgage lender - Santander !!!). I was unaware of the charges as I had moved after buying the Washing Machine, regardless of this - there should not have been any outstanding debt as I rang and asked to pay off the entire account.

Santander Store Cards were transferred to a company called New day in 2014 - and both are denying any knowledge of my account.

When Experian contacted Santander Credit Data Quality, all they would confirm is the information is accurate. they will not speak to me.

I have sent letters of complaints to both New day and Santander - to no avail.

What do I do ?

Best answers:

  • Who is shown on your report as supplying the data? They are responsible. You might have to complain to the Information Commissioner but try the internal complaint process of the data provider first (either Newday or Stdr) - put it in writing rather than phoning. You can ask for a copy of the complaints procedure for whoever it is
  • Not your problem they can't find your account.
You are best to ring the FOS. Be warned, it can take months to sort.
