A question about : I wanna be mortgage free!

Ok, so I've been on the debt free forum for AGES now and appear, thanks to the lovely Martin Lewis and the people that use the forum to have paid off nearly all my debts. Just the mortgage to go now.

However, I can't put money to paying off the mortgage because I am doing my teacher training and don't have a job lined up for September yet. And my hubby is a full time student, though he does work too.

Anyway, his contract runs out in July so at the moment we will both be unemployed from that date forward. So it's save save save time. So that a) we can afford to live while unemployed, b) we have money to chuck at the mortgage at a later date while keeping a safety net open, or c) use the money we save to finish off doing up the house.

We currently live in our bedroom....it's most annoying. I'll explain more another time if anyone is interested, but needless to say it would be nice to get the living room sorted, and the bathroom, and the kitchen........

Anyway, I've just filled my ISA for this year and have money waiting to go into next years already, so I'm feeling pretty positive! Yey me.

  • Well Done and Good Luck
  • Good luck! We'll be watching with interest - my cousin finishes teacher training this summer and says the prospects for job hunting look as if they'll be good after half term. Is it the same for you?
  • I hope so. Apparently it gets good around easter/May time. So fingers crossed I'll be sorted then. Until that time though, I can only save money, rather than pay anything off.
I'm not looking forward to the interviews I gotta say. I filled in 2 application forms, but heard nothing back. Mind you the ad's weren't really for NQT's so I was chancing my arm a little. Nevermind, it was good practice for filling in the forms anyway.
Just sending off my check to open my savings account with HiSAVE too. Got an email that their interest rates have just increased too! So that will hopefully provide me with somewhere to store any extra cash I might have.
    I'm trying anyway!
  • Well, I am applying for 2 more jobs. Not that near me, but not that far away either. When I say apply I mean I've asked for the application packs....ha ha.
Been a bit naughty though. Hubby and I got a bit excited and just booked us a christmas holiday to the US, to the place where I used to live for 2 years. Soooo the mortgage repayment idea isn't looking that good at the mo....oophs!
I start teaching on Monday on my B placement too! Bit scared but also quite excited! It's weird!
  • Good luck with the job hunting and the mortgage free goal. You will find there are plenty ex-DFWs on here!
  • Thanks. OMG Angela, how did you ever pay off 18K in 10 mths!!! I'm well impressed!
Wish I was that clever....I'm still clinging to the idea of a lottery win.
  • Well, I've settled in quite nicely at my new school. I really like it there. Wish I'd applied for the job thats going there....grrr. Anyway, it looks like I'll have the opportunity to make some money while I'm about anyway. They have offered me a position exam invigilating...woo hoo! £7.82 an hour.
Not amazing but better than what I got paid last year for doing it.
Still no job though. I applied for 3. The closing dates for 2 are tomorrow. The other I'm not even sure I'm interested in. We shall see. Still no big cash windfall come my way though! Gutted!
  • Oh yeah....booked a holiday back to Breckenridge, Colorado (where I lived for a bit) for December. So that the OH can see the place I'm always rambling on about.
Thats kinda taken up most of our little nest egg we were saving up....oophs!
  • Very Well done so far.
Enjoy your trip to the States at Christmas.
The best of luck in clearing off your mortgage.
  • Found a summer playscheme to perhaps apply for as a way of earning a little extra cash too! Woo.
  • Well done for planning ahead, I'm looking forward to moving from debt free wannabe to mortage free wannabe too.
    Good luck with the studies
  • Twinklie,
You might want to try to see if you can get into AQA - you can do it whenever possible in the evenings, etc.
I am in my third month. Its not big money (people say they earn Ј300 per month part time, but I am managing max Ј120 by doing it in the evenings or the odd weekend and then its taxed).
  • AQA the exam board?
I've applied for marking positions with exam boards but so far the only one I got offered included a standardisation meeting down in london which would have cost me a fortune...so didn't happen. Hoo hum.
Looks like the play scheme is out now too. Doh!
Got a job interview but I'm not going to go. Everyone I've spoken to says the school is a nightmare so going to avoid that one me thinks.
  • One of my friends applied for a job at the school where she did her placement, is it worth asking if they have any jobs coming up?
  • They had interview for a job there on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the closing date was just as I started my placement. So I had no idea about the job because in truth I'd not started looking yet.
Anyway, I'm well on the way with the application process. Had to knock back my first interview though because they gave me less than 24 hours notice to prepare an hour long lesson. I was on a full timetable more or less that day too so had no time to prepare.
To be honest though I figured if they are that disorganised, would I really want to work there? So I'm not too fussed. Would have been good to go for the experience though.
Hoo hum. I'll keep plodding away. I have 2 other jobs to apply for. One is a MASSIVE long shot and the other is a possibility, so fingers crossed. The closing dates are a month (plus) away though so plenty of time to get prepared.
  • I'm such a loser. My hubbys out and I have no idea what to do with myself. I'm so bored its untrue!
What does everyone else do when the OH is out?
  • I ended up having a total Poirot fest yesterday - ITV3 had three episodes (that I'm aware of - may have been more!) so I watched the first and last and recorded the middle one. I love Agatha Christie stuff and art deco, so it was a treat for me!
  • Hmmm....I guessing I need to figure out how to have some free time alone. He goes away for a few days at the end of this month on a training course.
I just ended up folding some washing then going to bed after watching Jonathan Ross cos I was so bored. I even picked up some lesson planning stuff before I told myself to get a grip and put it down. Ha ha
  • I want to be mortgage free too. Cant see that happening though for a while
