A question about : How much is your average monthly electric bill?

Hi all,

I wont bore you all with the details but Iwas speaking to Powergen today and they have told me that after I clear my arrears on the account that they estimate that I am using Ј82 a month.

After looking at some peoples SOA I realised that I seeem to be paying a lot more than some people. We have 3 adults in the house and apart from one light that is left on all night (energy efficient bold mind!) and the TV what is on most of the day we dont really use much more.

Is Ј82 A lot or am I being unrealistic? if you could share your thoughts and what you normally spend I would be interested.

Cheers

  • Hi crown
Ј82 sounds like a lot. We pay Ј40.79 for electricity - this was recently recalculated so I assume is an accurate reflection of usage. We are two adults and four children. The two adults work at home, so two computers are on pretty much all the time.
  • Anything from £50-£70, we use a lot as DH doesn't sleep well so the TV is on all night.
  • Hi Crown, we pay Ј37 a month for 2 adults in a small cottage, but with TV, computer, washing machine etc on in the evenings and weekends
  • mine is Ј90 for both on dual fuel
it was the cheapest i could get.
i switch EVERYTHING off at the wall when it's not getting used. before this i was Ј106 a month
  • We are classed a high user and pay about Ј70 a month.
  • Two bedroom house with 3 adults, I cook with all electric my dual-fuel bill is Ј55 a month and we are already in credit by Ј40 this year, so Ј82 sounds mighty high to me...
  • I only pay Ј27.50 per month. I refuse to use a tumble dryer or anything though and I am always yelling at the kids to turn off the lights. I am a bit fanatical about wasting energy and my kids even finish my sentence for me as if they leave taps running lights on etc I always shout who is wasting the earth's resources?. It works though.
  • Bill period Number of days Total Daily Average Total Daily Average 21/05/07 - 08/07/07 49 481 10 n/a n/a
That is mine with Scottish power and it comes to £42.28. I pay £30 a month DD and as you can see it will more than cover it.
This is for a three bedroom house with 1 adult and 2 kids. Three computers going most days, plus daughters tv in evening. Also use the dryer for about 3-5hours a week. (not had much choice last few weeks with constant rain)
  • Mine averages about £17 a month, I'm with Scottish Power online capped rate. £ bed house with just DD and I in during the evenings. Computer on most of the evening plus TV for a few hours. I don't use a tumble drier except in emergencies ie !!!!!! forgot to dry her uniform! Also all bulbs bar one are engery savings one. Haven't done the unplug thingie -really should!
  • Thanks for the replies,
It would seem that my Bill is extremely high. I am not able to move from powergen at present as we owe £970 to them according to there records.
I personally think there is something wrong somewhere as although we do use electric I honestly dont know how we use nearly double or in some cases triple what some of you are. I will make sure we start unplugging things at night and will try to get this cut down. My next debt to clear will be my electric bill so I can at least then look at the price comparision services.
  • You might consider an electrisave meter so you can see whats going on, i have one and its very enlightening!
    https://www.electrisave.co.uk/
    (cheaper on ebay)
  • Have had a look at the Electrisave thing - looks interesting and on ebay you can get a new one including postage for about Ј56 so will show OH when he gets home.
My electricity and gas bill combined are a whopping Ј147 a month - increased earlier this year from Ј84 combined a month!!!
Have always been in credit until we switched to Powergen almost a year ago, we were then presented with the biggest hugest bill in the world (or so it seems!) for our winter quarter. The meter shows it was right so obviously down to us to reduce our usage BIG TIME!
We used to have a prepayment meter - although the electric per unit was more expensive, we certainly kept an eye on things and as a result our costs were really pretty low.
  • Hypno, Our situation is the same in the sense that we used to have a prepaid meter card although we had to get rifd of it as nowhere was selling accepting the top up card in area anymore so we switched.
My Gas Bill is probally around £65 a month meaning that we both seem to be paying £147 for our utilities!.
Have you looked into moving using one of the comparison sites as yet? Im pretty sure we could both get better deals although as I mentioned I firstly need to get rid of my arrears.
  • Hi Crown, yes I do want to switch, but because the winter bill was way more than expected, the previous monthly payment credits did not cover it and we ended up in arrears with the monthly payment put up to Ј147. I am hoping that because of summer usage this will have evened itself out fairly soon, by which time I will be ready to switch (through quidco of course!!).
Shortly after getting the big bill, I did get a customer service courtesy call to see if I was happy with the service! Needless to say, the girl at the end of the phone was sorry she called me by the end of it
  • Very intresting thread
My Electricity bill is set at Ј92 a month but we dont have gas (electric only)
We try to be as energy efficant as possible. we have an LCD TV, only use the tumble dryer when its raining! (so alot recently ) and try to cook 2 meals at once in the oven
on the down side my PC is on 24/7 (it acts as a server) hallogen bulbs everywhere (these were there when we moved in and are all sunk into the cealing) and we drink alot of tea so the kettle is on about 10 times a day (but we only boil what we need) !
On the same subject (sort of ) does anyone know what appliances use the most electricity? for example is leaving the PC on all night worse than boiling the kettle 5 times ? or will leaving a light on all day be worse than having a sterio on standby all night ? If leaving my PC on 24/7 will have a huge impact on my bill then I may think about getting someone else to host for me ?
  • Coops, I also run a computer as a server from home now that broadband is quite stable now. I never really thought it would cost that much to run but may have to look into actually how much it is costing as it could be cheaper to just get a dedicated server if Im paying over the odds on my electric bill although the Geek in me loves the freedom I have with my own server lol
  • Quite often my pc's get left on, and it doesn't have a huge inpact on my bills. All my big kitchen appliences are A rated though (apart from chest freezer thats C rated)
  • Does anyone know of a site that can give you info on what uses the most electric? I know that leaving things on standby are still using nearly the same amount of electric as if I had left it on but I really want to cut this bill down as much as I can.
