A question about : how much does a new boiler cost (installed)?

Just been told that we need a new boiler. The current one is still working at the moment but could die any day. I have absolutely no idea how much it will be to get one out in but have a very nasty feeling that its going to be very expensive. Can anyone give me any idea what it might cost?

Feel very down as we were making progress with the debts but this could be a big setbacktitle=EEK!

  • Hi there - sorry to hear about your boiler. Ours went in the summer and it was quite expensive - about Ј1600 including all installation. Our plumber said that new building regs meant that every radiator needed its own temperature control valve too (I checked this and it was correct).
The only good thing about it is that we have more control over the temperature in the house, saving money, and that a new boiler is much more energy efficient. Even without switching suppliers our bills are about halved. Still, it will take about 5 years to make the savings pay for the boiler! My advice is to shop around, and get quotes from several different plumbers.
    Good luck
  • this may not work buuut why not take out that british gas heating cover??
for summing like 15 quid a month they insure you for unlimited call outs and replacemants.
theres prolly a period where you cant claim (bout a month i would say),
cheaper than paying straight out for a new boiler??
  • We had one fit about 4 years ago now, luckily, I knew a plumber, he went to plumbers mechant for us and got us a boiler that apparantly is the dogs nads, fit it with 2 extra radiators for £1100. It does use less gas than the previous one (which also had carbon monoxide)! and was a good price, so price quoted by previous poster is probably more realistic.
  • We paid £1600 (total) 18m ago for a 2 bed flat.
I really sympathize, as it was during our debt free journey as well. Could you eek it out until next winter and save up for it. We had an electric shower, so could get away with it.
  • why do you say it might die at any time? did a service engineer tell you that? seems unlikely to me ... boilers aren't like cars with lots of complicated bits but are pretty reliable until something major breaks.
  • We've just had a quote for fitting a new boiler and even the cheapest boiler is in excess of £800 plus fitting. New regs on condenser boilers have pushed prices up I'm afraid
  • Ours went last summer and I was told it would be Ј1500-Ј2000. In the end I bought the Boiler on Ebay (A proper one from a trader, a Condensing combi) for Ј525 and found a Heating Engineer in the Yellow pages who fitted it for Ј400.
  • There are grants available for owner occupiers and tennents. On benefits or not. So it will be really useful for you to go into this. There is a scheme called 'magic boilers' near where I live for example. You will need to trawl the internet for any schemes and grants to suit your circumstances.
Your local council are likely to be running some as they have to meet new lower energy useage targets. Don't forget to try all the councils in your area not just the one in which you actually live. Energyhelpline.com and many other national sites also have details on this.
  • I have just has a quick look on ebay and they have Brand New Condensing Combi boilers from Ј434.
  • Go here - Warm Front
    Applies to WTC etc too

  • They've been saying that about our boiler for the past four years, it's 19 years old. It's probably got a while in it yet.
Start a saving fund for it now, then when it goes, it won't be a major issue
  • Thanks Guys I just had a survey done and it said I needed a new one asap
didnt realise how much it was though
  • If you want someone honest and fair to fit it, a tip I once heard was phone Age Concern and they will recommend someone reliable to you. Ive never done it though as my husband is a plumber and able to do every job in the house just about and has contacts for anything else.
