A question about : How to cancel Virgin Media WITHOUT cancelation fee

Hello money savers!
How are you?

I have some great news for people who want to cancel their Virgin Media contract WITHOUT having to pay any cancellation charge. I just did it... you can too!

The problem: I moved house 6 months ago, and they put me on a new 12 month contract for TV, Broadband and landline. I want to leave virgin to save money, but they wanted me to pay Ј10 PER SERVICE per remaining MONTH (so, Ј30 times 6).... Pretty expensive.

The solution: I noticed that my tv package XL had gone up by the price of just Ј1 on my May bill. I belive virgin increased their prices by Ј1 but give you a Ј1 discount for e-billing in order to make people switch to e-billing.

The Legal stuff: If you read your terms and conditions take a look at Section J5

If:
Virgin Media Ltd, Virgin Media Entertainment and/or Virgin Media Payments increase their respective charges under these agreements;
you may cancel those services affected without penalty by giving Virgin Media Ltd and/or Virgin Media Entertainment (as applicable) at least 30 days' notice in writing.

So, I called them up, and told them that I wanted to cancel due to the J5 clause.... They said no problem. I just called 0845 454 1111 and did it over the phone. I asked if they needed it in writing and they said they were happy to cancel my contract over the phone. They also said they could cancel ALL of my services, phone, TV and broadband in one go, right there on the phone, even though technicaly their legal blurb only covers the package that had the cahnge of price (in my case the TV)

So, what this means is that if you want to get out of your contract and you find that ANY of your virgin prices have changed, even if its a phone call price change, you can see if you can get out without paying any cancel fee.

Please note that the cancelation period is 30 days, so if you phone on the 2nd of June, you will lose your services on 2nd July.

I hope this helps people cancel if they really want to.

I just wanted to say that I had no problems with virgin and find their service good, and have been a very happy customer, but due to a change in circumstances I no longer needed TV, Broadband and Phone.

Hope this helps people

  • Not quite sure how you got away with this as it is in the T&C's that Virgin do have the right to increase charges. Must have got someone who not too sure what they're doing.
From memory there is something in the T@Cs regards to increases over a certain percentage but the Ј1 price increase wouldn't fall into this bracket.
    Good luck though.
  • Well, it worked for me... the full terms and conditions are online: https://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...ble/terms.html
    check out J5...
  • Well I have never known anyone escape from Virgin that easily before, I hope that you are not counting your chicken's before they are hatched.
Virgin have been known to take payment after cancellation..
  • J5a looks pretty clear cut to me. Although they didn't require anything in writing, it might be an idea to confirm in writing and quoting the time and date of the phone call. I would use recorded delivery also.
  • I was wondering if anyone could help me!
    Sorry for the long email.
I have been with vm since sep/oct 2010, i recently upgraded to 30mb broadband, ever since i have, ive had nothing but trouble from it.
1st they sent it to the wrong address on the fri, but went ahead & upgraded it which meant i had no internet at all, then rang up & was told they had the right address down, rang back on sun to get it redilivered on the mon, sat in all day mon waiting didnt come, rang vm back & was told it wasnt reordered at all. Finially got the super hub about a week later, but it didnt make a difference to the speed. Rang them vm again, he told me what to do on the phone with the laptop worked fine after that. Couple of days later speed dropped again, had to ring them again & was told a technican would be out on sat from 8am -12 pm to fix it, that was ok, the day before he was due got an automatic msg saying he was coming out 12pm - 4pm so had to ring vm back again & was told they had double booked even though i had taken the morning off work & rebooked for this fri. But on sat sky offered me a better deal & i took it now vm are trying to say i have to pay them Ј180 to cancel my contract.
To me they broke their contract by lying & constantly putting off fixing the problem. Really annoyed at the amount of time i have wasted on trying to resolve this. I dont want to pay the Ј180, but can they make me or what can i do
    Thanks
  • i am with you on this one i phoned to cancel my contract with them and i was told cancelation fee is 180 pounds there must be a way round this
  • tell them you do not agree to accept the new increase in charges coming in April 1st 2012 - this should allow you to disconnect without contract termination fees.
  • You can only do this AFTER receiving the letter confirming the increase, and for a period of 30 days. After that, the waiver ends and the full termination fee is charged.
  • I have just received the letter from VM notifying me of a Ј3.50 per month increase just 2 months after joining. the service (especially Broadband) has been atrocious. So I am thinking I should use this opportunity to leave, but how do I go about doing this? I have tried calling, but as usual it is impossible to speak to anyone after they have sold you the service. I have attempted to review the T&Cs, but can't find anything specific.
    Thanks,
    Craig
  • Hi, I have just received this letter and been told on the phone it is in their terms and conditions and you have to pay to cancel, i was told Ј97 for remaining 6 months.
However they could not tell me where in terms and conditions so after reviewing the booklet i found in point j, part 3 you can cancel within 30 days with no charge as they have increased charges. Had to read this to the guy over the phone and then he suddenly found a communication that meant he could cancel me over the phone without charge!
I said no thanks i will cancel in writing just in case.
The address he gave me was Complaints, Virgin Media, PO Box 333, Matrix Court, Swansea, SA7 9ZJ. This address is also in their online complaints booklet.
Hope it helps as i think their advisers are either poorly trained if they do not know about this clause or are told by management not to mention it. I think the increase is shocking to happen to people within a contract and hope in results in lots of publicity!
  • They have every right to increase prices within the minimum term-it is not a fixed price contract.
And of course if that is to your detriment, you have every right to cancel without penalty.
  • I clicked through the link in the email telling me about price rises. It says:
"The legal stuff: If you do not wish to be bound by these changes you can cancel your contract with us without penalty. The process to be followed is set out in our terms and conditions here."
    Link here
So I might be doing that. I'm a bit disillusioned with virgin at the min. I'm paying about Ј50 per month after these price hikes and not getting much compared to other providers now.
    Olly
  • Totally disgusted with virgin media been a vm customer for 5 years and pay 78 quid a month just for services due to there new pricing scheme this will put my bill up well over 80 quid been looking into moving to sky and have found out I can get the same package for around 60 needless to say I will be cancelling vm immediately glad I've read this tonight so I don't get fobbed off with the usual sales talk.
  • What makes you think that Sky are immune from prices rises?-they had one only last Autumn.
  • Thank you so much op
Just called VM and cancelled our contrat with no fee's despite only being four months into a twevle month contract
  • I have called them after receiving the price hike but, the guy I talked to stuck to his guns offering to not increase the price after April and If I cancel have to pay the remaining months of the contract which they said started after moving to my new address. what a trap.
  • A home move with VM always starts you on a new minimum term contract. But that should not serve as an impediment to you using the price rise as a way of ending your contract early without penalty.
