A question about : Hmrc debt

Hi, I have received a letter from HMRC saying that from year end 2009 I owe Ј328.60 in underpaid tax.
I've looked on the website & it says they will want the full amount, if you can't pay in full we will want a full explanation as to why & they may still expect payment in full.
I have bad anxiety so cannot face ringing them.
I am in Incapacity benefit and DLA.
I have no idea why my tax was underpaid....I was working part time, permitted work, but the person doing the wages paid my tax and ni.

Can I write to them and offer maybe Ј20 per week? Do you think they'd accept this? I can't ring them, the thought of being interrogated on the phone makes me feel sick.

  • In your position, the first thing i would do is to sit down with your P45s/P60 for the year and the relevant tax allowances, rates, bands and rules and calculate whether or not HMRC are right. People on here can help with this, provided that you have all employment details for the year.
The next step would be to try to find out whose fault it is: ultimately you are responsible for ensuring that you have paid the correct amount of tax.
If you can show that HMRC were given all the relavant information, you may be able to get the tax written off. HMRC do however accept payment plans.
Are you near to a Citizens Advice office? They can sometimes help with this sort of thing.
