A question about : Help! Paternity pay

Hi,

I am in a funny situation, as I am leaving my current job when my wife goes into labour, but I will technically be employed by them for 2 more weeks while I get my statutory paternity leave

I then plan starting my new job a month later.

However statutory paternity pay is shockingly low, and I will then have another 2 weeks without any income, which is not a helpful way to start raising a baby. My wife hasn't worked for a while so she does not get maternity leave either

Is there anything anybody can think of to help me get some extra income during this 1 month period?

Thanks

  • Hmm....I don't know if because she isn't working it still counts but I know that goverments pay maternity pay in some situations perhaps look into it?
You'd get tax credits and child benifits but it took 6 weeks for ours to get sorted as we had to register the baby and we couldn't get the appointment for 4 weeks after he was born, then obvouisly the paperwork has to be done...so that wouldn't be much help.
Can't you stay in your current job untill your new job has a start date? :/ You could even just take the week off if your that short on money.
  • Hello!
When is your baby due? Is there any chance you could save some extra cash from your current wage before you're due to go on leave, might mean a few sacrifices here and there. But would be worth it to try and get some money to tide you over for the few weeks (I'm assuming you have to work a couple more weeks before getting paid from your new job)
Also, will you get a final salary from your current job? I know that's usually paid in the next payroll run after you leave.
You could start asking around now, if there are any bar jobs/part time jobs that will help you raise some cash before the big day! Congrats by the way
  • Can you bring the start date forward for the new job? Are you due any holiday pay when you leave your present job?
  • Either save money in the meantime to build up a buffer to help through that lower earnings time..
Is there any reason why choosing to change jobs at that time? [Attention wise may not be a good idea to be starting a new job just as become a new parent?]..
Do you have any Annual Holiday that could be saved until then?
Ive found in the past, that just because Paternity Leave \ Pay is available , its not financially wise to take it.. so have used alternatives such as Annual Holiday.. as basically paternity offering have been just a step up from Unpaid leave..
    Have you already given notice?
