A question about : Free Ј1,000 Dental Accident Cover

What's it about?

On a first come, first serve basis Tesco is giving away free £1,000 Dental Accident insurance cover to anyone over 18. This isn't the same as dental cover; it only has a limited use, yet because it's free everyone should grab it as it's a good free year's supplement to NHS cover.

IMPORTANT. This is not the same as dental insurance

Tesco's Dental Accident policy covers you for up to four claims of £250 a year for private dental treatment if you've had an accident - for example falling and breaking a tooth. It doesn't cover you for any type of normal treatment such as having tooth decay.

If you want that (and sadly with finding an NHS dentist so difficult, many have no choice) then read the full Cheapest Dental Insurance article.

Why is Tesco doing this?

Tesco has also launched its own new paid dental cover plan; and as you need to phone to get this, undoubtedly it will try and flog you that at the same time.

Yet to be fair to Tesco, it will give you this by itself no problem; and doesn't request any payment details - so there's no risk it'll try to charge you for it next year.

How do I get it?

All the details, terms and conditions, are on this Tesco page.

Are you a member of a cashback site?

If you're a member of a cashback site like Quidco, you may actually be able to get £1 for doing this (thanks to the MoneySavers in the discussion below who pointed it out). What you're actually looking for is the free dental cover offered there by AXA insurance (which is who organises it for Tesco). If you're not a member of cashback sites then first read the Top Cashback Sites article

  • Thanks Martin!! Every little helps!
  • As the old saying goes, nothin in life is free. Or at least not intentionally. I guess having read the latest findings by the UK Information Commissioner entitled: protect your own data made me do a u-turn on this freebie.
But you decide - have a read on this:
    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08...r_over_to_you/
    you been warned
  • I suspect tesco probably have all your details anyway
  • Oh yes. They also have an idea how many people are in a household, what age group. They can even correctly predict if you have period pain ( monthly purchase of tampons and good old nurofen)
  • I used to work for Tesco. They know lots about you, even if you don't have a clubcard (you do use the same debit/credit card each week don't you?)
And if you do have a Clubcard, haven't you always wondered why your money off vouchers are always so well targeted at stuff you already buy?
  • Having previously worked for a dental insurance company I think you'll find this will only cover for external impact i.e. a blow to the mouth or a fall. It probably wouldn't cover for broken fillings as a result of eating. I may be wrong but it does say "direct oral impact", eating an apple wouldn't be classed as an impact. Still, if you had a fall and broke a tooth then you'd be covered and that's what insurance is for - and it's free!!

  • Is this still available or has it gone already? If I try calling the 0800 number on the website it's just saying "the service cannot be connected"
  • Well good luck getting through folks ...
I was on hold for 23 minutes this morning before the line was disconnected !!
  • I've been on hold for 10 minutes so far...
"We're really sorry we have been unable to answer your call yet. Please stay on the line and a consultant will be with you shortly" Is being repeated every 2 seconds just to annoy me...
I'll update this post if I get through!
    EDIT:
At 20 mins...got through, the whole process only took 3 minutes and I'm all set up... They didn't take any payment details, and when they asked I said I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years and I'm with the NHS she didn't even bother trying to sell me the other package. Great Success!
Also, just for information, they are underwritten by AXA health insurance, which is who you will talk to. And they said they may pass your details, but the wording seemed to indicate that it was only for medical purposes, or in an emergency...but it was vague so it may mean for marketing purposes?
  • My hubby was on hold for 20 mins before getting through but is now insured for free! Brilliant! I am now on hold myself and don't mind because of what I'll get out of it.Note- they will only let one person apply per phone call.
EDIT: I was on hold for 20mins and then they cut me off! How annoying! I am determined though to get this and am now on hold again!
EDIT: I was on hold for a further 10 mins and was cut off again!!!I decided to follow another poster's example and rang back and pressed option 2. I got through immediately and am now covered.PRESS OPTION 2 for hassle free cover!
  • I phoned this morning, aked to press option 1 or 2, pressed 1, then sounded if the line was dead. Phoned back again, then pressed option 2-got through straight away. All sorted out in 5 mins and yes they do try to offer you dental insurance for £16.95 a month for private (cannot claim n the first 3 months) and £8.95 a month for NHS (cannot claim in the first month) or alternatively if you do joint insurance you get a slight discount!
  • After holding on the phone for 20 mins this morning before successfully registering, I subsequently found out that you can register for this exact same offer online via Quidco, which saves waiting on the phone and earns you Ј1 cashback...doh!
  • hi, earlier in the year I was given a leaflet by a guy for free dental. phoned up and was given something much the same, only directly by AXA not Tesco...........they do try to sell you something else, but sometimes it's worth a listen.
  • Wow, thank's for the quidco tip! Just signed up online and will hopefully get paid a pound for doing it. They have Ј1 cashback for free physio cover too!
