A question about : Fixed rate ISAs allowing additional deposits

Dear all,

There are a small handful of fixed rate ISAs out there which allow additional deposits indefinitely (i.e. not just within a short time of opening the bond). I wondered if anyone had perhaps considered opening one of these as a bit of an insurance policy against future rate drops. So for example open a 2-year bond now with a small transfer from a previous year ISA for example, but then not deposit a larger sum for another year or so... or not at all depending on what rates were available at the time.

The reason I'm thinking this is I have a fixed rate ISA maturing in 2016 and I'm worried rates could well be really dire by then.

I know both Lloyds and KRBS offer fixed rate ISA's which allow additional deposits. Does anyone know of any others? Or even any which allow indefinite transfers-in? Most allow only future deposits of new money.

I know people will probably say it's pointless to chase such dire rates, but I've already maxed out multiple current accounts, and I've had my fingers burnt with S&S in the past - so just want a good old cash ISA at the moment!

Thanks in advance!

Best answers:

  • Barclays offer a 2 year fixed rate ISA that allow additional deposits anytime. It offers a decent rate.
  • It looks like the Barclays account allows additional deposits for up until 5th April 2016. So I think the KRBS offering slightly beats it as the KRBS 2-year fix allows additional deposits at any time and also a slightly higher interest rate. Needs a minimum Ј1000 deposit / transfer to open it though.
  • Can you explain how you've had your fingers burnt in the past with S&S ISAs? They're long term and over most time periods shares have outperformed cash, even recently, so interested to know what went wrong.
