A question about : fitting TRVs

been quoted 350+vat for fitting 7 TRVs, is that reasonable?

in south east

Best answers:

  • Better off fitting a programmable thermostat. This costs around Ј65 and fitting, depends on your skill level. Them drop to 19C and we use 11,000 kWh a year.

  • Is that cost including supplying the TRVs? assuming so it sounds a bit on the high side even before vat.
In regards to Blackbeards comments, cost saving isn't the be all and end all of fitting TRVs, it can still be useful to have individual control of rads, for example our stat situated in living room, most rooms will match the temperature in there except we have a reptile room in which the heating of vivs bumps temps right up, there's no need for the rad in there to be on full or even on at all sometimes, and as much as we could still turn it off etc without trvs it makes things easier.
  • yeah it is including the supply. Agree it sounds high so I'm waiting on others.
The main reason we want it is to better control the temperature in the bedrooms.
  • we paid Ј45 + vat for supply and fit for 10. We won't go into how dire the stuff these plumbers used and how badly they mucked up the installation though.....
  • it was an add on to a bigger job so they were here anyway
  • We are getting 10 TVR's fitted along with room thermostat for Ј340 Inclusive of materials in the north west.
  • Just a few points to think about. Contract TRVs start at roughly Ј8 each and the pricier Drayton/Danfos/Honeywell ones can go up to about Ј15 each..nearly double. I do use contract ones in my work unless requested otherwise as they seem to work OK (Well I have them on my own radiators as a test system) and it keeps the cost down. Here in the North I charge Ј30 per radiator all in, unless its a complete rotter of a job like on old microbore when I put it up to Ј35. I don't think that for a Down South price Ј50 a go is ridiculous as everything is pricier there.
At that price they should include replacement of system inhibitor though.
Doing TRVs is one of those jobs that is either a complete doddle or can be a nightmare on somewhat mangled microbore pipes.
I would agree they are a useful addition to a system. They can help reduce heating costs, but comfort is the main reason for them. I have two unused rooms with them set at "1" or a bit higher just to air the room and stop damp and such like. Then when my family come home to visit we just turn em up and hey presto.
  • IMHO 19 deg is freezing. We are running between 20 and 20.5.
TRV's on all rads minus hallway + programmable thermostat in hallway is the way to go. That's what I was told. Paid about Ј600 for 18 rads + inhibitor
